Would it be a pain to stay in Greenwich for visiting London

2 adults, 2 teens. Ideally want interconnected rooms as planing to stay 6-7 nights but prices are expensive obviously. Wondering would it be. PITA to stay in Greenwich? Otherwise any recommendations welcome.
Would like maybe a step up from premier inn as we hope to stay for a week.

It depends what you mean by a pain and what you want from your trip. Greenwich is beautiful, lovely pubs and places to eat. Maritime museum and grounds are great, the market is nice for pottering around, great views of London from the observatory. Cool to run along the river. But I’d say it’s probably enough for a day trip, no need for longer there . As a base, it would take you up to an hour to get into central London via public transport if you’re wanting to get the west end etc. that’s what most Londoners would do getting in and out of London for work etc so wouldn’t necessarily bother me and there are some cool means of travel like the Thames clipper - but you may be wanting something more walkable/better connected than that . The surrounding areas of Greenwich are a bit dodgy and not really tourist destinations. You could also look at places to stay in Richmond which is also further out of London but on the tube so a bit easier to get to the west end for day trips into London and lovely to be by the river and park.

what would you like to do whilst in London and I can perhaps recommend a good base ?

Lol areas surrounding Greenwich are not dodgy. It’s totally fine. Take usual precautions with regard to personal safety in a city and don’t do stupid stuff like walk around with your phone out and it’s perfectly safe.

Source: I lived in Deptford until last year and have friends who live throughout New Cross/Charlton/East Greenwich/Lewisham. It’s perfectly safe.

Sorry where are all these people getting the idea that it’s an HOUR from Greenwich to central London?

Google maps is telling me 36 minutes right now to my old flat from the city. SE10 to Broadwick St says 40 mins.

ETA: saw someone saying if you type in Greenwich to Covent Garden it says an hour - that’s because it puts the pin past Charlton and makes you walk 20 mins to Woolwich for the Elizabeth line.

If you stay by Greenwich rail station (there are hotels there) then you’re right by the DLR and train stations.

@crackfoxy I am mystified as to why anyone would get a bus from Greenwich to the underground? Literally nobody who lives in Greenwich does that. There are two train lines from central Greenwich going to central London. 8 minutes from central Greenwich to central London. No need at all to get the underground. It’s complicated and takes an awful lot longer. If you want to get the underground you would have to go 15 minutes on the bus and then spend 20 minutes on the underground to get to central London. Why would you do that?!

I don’t understand why people post misinformation on here!

Yeah I am totally mystified by the misinformation also! Just stay in one of the hotels by the train station. DLR from bank (central line) every few minutes or trains are plentiful from LB running til past midnight.

I think the problem is lots of people think you must be in the tube to enjoy and live in London. Us SE Londoners have been enjoying our regular trains and absolutely can get around without a tube in sight. It's often quicker than those that travel in on many tube lines.

Agree. I don’t live in Greenwich anymore but my commute from zone 3 SE London is quicker than that of my colleagues who get the district line from Richmond or from Haringay.

Edited

Even if you take issue with Lewisham or Deptford being called dodgy; they’re hardly destination areas for someone coming to visit on holiday.

so funny people think it’s ‘spreading misinformation’ about Greenwich as though I’ve got something against the area. I agree it’s a great place to live and visit ! if google maps estimate is misinformation then I give up 😂

I agree with fellow SE Londoners that Greenwich has lots to do locally and is well connected to central London. It’s <10 mins to London Bridge with trains through London to Kings X / West Hampstead and beyond as well as into the City. Plus the DLR to Canary Wharf (which quite often has good stuff going on) and Tube links and into Bank. I’d say West London museums probably take 45 mins - train strikes atm mean the timetable is all messed up. Lots of eating places in Greenwich - not amazing as it’s pretty touristy but you can get your usual chain burger / pizza / Nando’s, a few independent cafes and some reasonable pubs. Happy to provide recommendations!

Greenwich is great and it's fun to take the boat into town. Or you can jump on the train for a few minutes. Nice places to eat and beautiful park to walk in, which makes it less claustrophobic than more central areas.

After spending a chunk of time researching Greenwich hotel options, public transport and parking, I can now say I would definitely stay in Greenwich at the Doubletree By Hilton - https://hotellook.tp.st/neey8Kwz if I am visiting London now and in the future.

Agree that it’s not a bad place to stay at all. Train is quick. You can mix it up on a day or two with the Clipoer to Embankment (I think that takes about 40 minutes?).
