Car Seat for Airplane

My daughter (nearly 5yo) and I are going to be travelling quite a bit this year and I will be renting a car each time, hiring a car seat will be quite costly. I was looking into purchasing one here and taking it with us on the plane. Has anyone done this? Is it a good idea? Which car seat would you recommend? Do all airlines accept car seats being taken on as hand luggage/used on board the plane? Thanks

I don't beleive most airlines allow it over aged 4- and you'd have to check with airlines regarding carry on- I'd assume most would make you put it in the hold.

Your car seat would need to be approved for plane travel and there are very few in the UK that are as they need to be very narrow to fit on the seat and be able to be fixed with lap belt only. I'm not sure there are any approved ones that are hot infant carriers.

Just put it in the hold. I've done that before with no issues.

Can you get the trunki booster seat rucksack ? Not to sit on in the plane but easy to take with you.

Unless she's small for her age, there's none you'll get which can be used on the plane seat. The high backed booster types don't work for this.

You could get trunki boostapak or chicco fold and go to take as hand luggage.

Depending on your DC hight, could you just take a booster seat as hand luggage?
I've done this many years ago- before the rules became so complex.

It's also worth checking out the law in your destination country.

Boostapak at that age.

Check the seat complies with the law at your destination then pack it well and put it in the hold. We have done this many times.

Even if you can find a seat that fits a five year old and complies with airline regs, your daughter would be so cramped sitting in it on the plane.

Not all car seats can be used abroad.

For example, a relative of mine moved to Australia and couldn't take his kids seats because they only allow seats that have been made in Australia.

I work for an airline. For her age unless she’s small then a standard car seat won’t fit and would most likely be refused. Can you not get one of the booster seats and check it in with your luggage?
