Highly recommend Sleep Atocha hotel near the train station and just yards from the Reina Sofia art gallery. It’s styled like a hostel with tiny rooms but fabulous staff and a roof top breakfast room that has free coffee and pastries all day.Look it up-we went twice and would stay again

Not sure when half term is in the UK but Eurostars hotels would be my choice for Spain in general. After staying in an ok (but wouldn't return) Holiday Inn in Madrid, Spanish friends recommended the Eurostars chain as their go-to.
There are 3 or 4 smack bang in the centre, we stayed in the Plaza Mayor one.

Things to see: Reina Sofia for Guernica (and the most obnoxious staff ever in a museum 😂) the Prado, the radio tower thingy for a panoramic view, the best burgers in Spain on the Gran Via...Just wander round really. It's a fabulous city.

I'd avoid the bus tour. It was pretty rubbish.

We stayed at the Intercontinental some years ago - got a great deal on last minute.com. Got huge family room shared by teenager and upgraded to club level which afforded access to club room with huge variety complementary wine, drinks and snacks from 5pm. Very welcome as you eat late in Madrid.
it was in the business district close to public transport, but we just walked everywhere

Another vote for the Eurostars hotel chain. We stayed in the Casa de Liruca (sp?) in the Sol area, and would go there again.

Forgot to say we also stayed in the Ganivet hotel a few years ago, with two teens. We had adjacent rooms. It's a bit further from the centre, but definitely walkable. The breakfast there was very good irc.
Things we have enjoyed - Prado, Royal Palace, Retiro Park, cable car, Reina Sofia (preferred Prado though), tour around football stadium, churros and hot chocolate, shopping for shoes, and eating out late.
Although we haven't tried it, the Botin restaurant is supposed to be the oldest in the world.
Enjoy!

The Artrip hotel is lovely. We stayed there by accident once after a travel agent fuck up with our actual hotel. We kept hoping the fuck up wouldn't be resolved so we could keep staying at the artrip instead of our much less lovely actual hotel.
