If you could spend 6 weeks next summer anywhere, where would you go?

I've got a lot of accrued annual leave. My boss is ok for me to take 6 weeks in a row next year. DH is self employed and takes the school summer holidays off anyway so we’re thinking of taking advantage of the kids also being off and being away for the whole time.

But where to? Long haul destinations don’t always have great weather in July and Aug and whilst we’ve got a healthy budget we can’t break the bank.

where would you go?? Kids will be 11 and 13

Scotland. Only ever been there twice - and one of those was very brief, and I feel like I have never been able to do it justice.

An American road trip definitely!

I have the same dilemma, too many choices. I'm thinking either:
South America (galapgos)
Namibia
Sri Lanka
Malaysia & Indonesia
Canada
Guess it depends on cost and trying not to do too much as think I'd rather really explore a place than have a whistle-stop tour.

Sri Lanka would be good, weather is decent usually, budget can be stretched by opting for locally owned b&b's rather than international hotel groups, take trains, buses around the interior (do bring a fleece and a rain jacket as it's colder higher up!) climb Adam's peak at night for a great experience. Then book a hotel on the coast for the last week for some r&r.

Some great ideas here, thank you.

I’m longing for our backpacking days (though appreciate things will be very different 20 years later and with kids in tow).

I may look into a house swap too actually….

@bbbum Backpacking is totally doable with kids, particularly at the age yours are - that's what we did in Sri Lanka (and several other countries).
With smart phones it's all different than 20 years ago anyway.
Easy to book accommodation ahead rather than find when you get there.
Still trains, buses, local food and so on.

We did 7 weeks in Spain this summer. We rented a villa in San miguel de salinas as its slightly out of the tourist areas and had a "Spanish summer." It was beautiful.
