Recommend. Guest house / hotel in Franschhoek

We've got 2 weeks in the cape town area at Easter.

I've booked the first week in Camps Bay, then 2 nights at Aquila.

I'm thinking 2 nights in Franschhoek* with DC 11 & 13. Can anyone recommend a great hotel or guest house?

We're then staying a night at the Lion Sanctuary in Darkenstein. Where should we spend our final 4 days / nights?

Thanks all!*

It depends on budget and it’s been some years since I lived in Cape Town and visited regularly but Akademie Street is a little gem in Franschhoek. Unique, great service, easy stroll into the village for dinner and delicious breakfasts that keep you going most of the day.

Thanks @Hermie12 it's adult only sadly, looks amazing

Ah no! Perhaps check out the Last Word then

Babylonstoren for sure.

Oh I just see now you are also looking for suggestions for the last few nights. Have you considered Hermanus or up the west coast to Langebaan. It's not a hustle bustle type area though, but you do seem to have a nice variety planned already.

cathyandclaire · 21/01/2024 17:45

We stayed at the Leeu House which was fabulous. It was part of a longer trip, so not sure about prices but it was a highlight. We also loved our time in Hermanus as a PP recommended.

MangosteenSoda · 22/01/2024 08:26

It’s been too long since I went to Franschoek so I can’t recommend anything but if the website wheretostay.co.za is still going, they always had great options.

I also recommend Hermanus for a couple of days. I always used to stay at Pelagus guest house, but as above, it’s been a while.

I’d actually spend the last couple of nights in Cape Town as it really is the highlight of the area. Maybe stay in a different location?

For tiny and quiet and pretty, you could look at Paternoster which is a bit north of CT.

Camps Bay is handy for Cape Town.A week there seems generous in the Autumn. The op won’t need more time there. The whales won’t be at Hermanus either in April. They are there in the South African spring.

We have always used the Portfolio Collection of guest houses you can see on africacollection.com. Lots of great places to stay and never been disappointed. I would also recommend going along the Garden Route to Knysna.

MangosteenSoda · 22/01/2024 09:40

Whales notwithstanding, I’d choose to spend a couple of days in Hermanus if I wanted a small town vibe over driving a much longer distance to Knysna. But I don’t really enjoy the Garden Route. Otoh, I love Cape Town and would enjoy time staying somewhere central. Horses for courses and all that.

The range of replies lets OP choose what suits. It’s a beautiful part of the world so hopefully OP will love whatever she chooses.

We stayed in SA in November.
In Franschhoek we stayed at the Gable Manor guest house which was really nice.
There is also a Protea Hotel right in Franschhoek which looked really nice too - and it had a Hussar Grill steakhouse next door.
We also stayed in Cape Town at the Garden Court Hotel which was very handy for the Waterfront.
Stellenbosch is a nice place to stay with a nice town centre.
The Drakenstein Lion Park was great (I didn't know you could stay overnight).
One of our favourite places was the Babylonstoren Vineyard - probably one of the best places I have ever been.
We spent a day at the Aquilla Game Reserve, we went on a jeep safari and also a horseback safari - saw lots of animals very close up.
A drive down to Cape Point is a really nice day out. Table Mountain on the cable car is good. Robben Island I was really looking forward to, but it is a very rushed and not very interesting trip and I would give it a miss (Sorry).
Feel free to ask any questions as it is very recent that we were there.

Here La Petite Ferme | Franschhoek Luxury Accommodation, Restaurant La Petite Ferme] even if you don't stay here, you just go for the view!!

We also had a gorgeous meal at Le Quartier Francais. We stayed at what is now Mont Rochelle but thats a little way out.

We did a wine tour on horseback - that was absolutely brilliant.

We went to La Petit Ferme. Views are lovely - food - I’ve had better.

I would stay a couple of nights in the Wine region and then drive to Knysna and then back to Cape Town. Without whales Hermanus is not so appealing. We also drove around the Swartberg area which can easily be accessed from the route between Franschoek and Knysna. Unless you are wine tasting every day, you don’t need that long in the wine region.

We are doing a similar holiday at Easter with our 3 children (although younger than yours). Staying 8 nights in camps bay. Then going to franschhoek for 4 night. Staying here....https://www.stonybrook.co.za/

Due to having younger children we didn't want to travel too much whilst there. But I would of loved to go to aquilla too.

It's a little outside of franschhoek so may not suit but we liked how peaceful it looked.

Another vote for La Petit Ferme.

We also had a fabulous two nights at Grootbos and saw the great white sharks. Husband got in the cage but I remained firmly on the boat 😂😂😂. That memory will remain with me forever!

TizerorFizz · 28/01/2024 20:25

@DibbleDooDah Did you see the picture of the shark taken from inside the cage where the shark rammed the cage and bent the metal? Put us off big time.

La Residence in Franschhoek is magical. A trip up
the Garden Route is a must.
