How long in Dubrovnik - Croatia road trip

Planning to do a Croatia road trip this summer kicking off in Dubrovnik. My question is how many nights would you recommend staying there for before heading off to Split? We are very much ‘see the highlights and crack on to the next thing’ kind of people rather than chilling out having leisurely lunches if that helps

One or two nights.

Bettyscakes · 18/01/2024 16:28

I’d say 2 nights

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 18/01/2024 16:30

Agree, one or two nights should be plenty.

LittleGreenDuck · 18/01/2024 16:31

The old town is very small, so if that's all you want to see then two nights would be enough. If you'd like to explore the wider area, perhaps take the cable car up to the museum and restaurant etc. then add another night.

Croatia is stunning, have fun.

2 nights is plenty to see the basics and get a feel for it, we found it REALLY busy with tour guides. If you can fit it in your itinerary, with a car Split - Mostar was worth the trip (we stayed overnight so got to experience it without any groups). Also found Zadar unexpectedly nice and much cheaper than Split / Dubrovnik

Great, thanks for the feedback everyone. That’s really helpful. I think we will do two nights and then head off to split where we are planning to do a few days relaxing on Brac then up to Zagreb via the waterfalls for the flight home. Any advice on a good hotel to stay in before getting into Plitvice ahead of the crowds?

How many of you are there? We stayed in the most amazing apartment last year!

Goldfinchtriad · 19/01/2024 10:26

There are 6 of us, so will need three beds which I appreciate makes things more tricky!

I'd go further and say you're better off staying in Cavtat and getting the boat across to Dubrovnik for the day/evening. Dubrovnik is soooo busy that I really wanted to get away after a few hours and Cavtat is stunning, cheaper and just a gorgeous water taxi ride away.

Bettyscakes · 19/01/2024 11:05

Ah ok our apartment only slept 4.

I found Cavtat a bit too quiet. We stayed 15/20 mins from Dubrovnik old town and it was very quiet.

I agree that Zadar is lovely. Well worth the visit and handy for ferries to and from the islands.

Plitvice is stunning, one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. I can't help with accommodation as we drove up from Zadar, but there was plenty about. Pack a jumper for the visit, was a lot chillier up there than the coastal areas, even in August.

ToothFairy2023 · 19/01/2024 11:23

2 nights

Lordofmyflies · 19/01/2024 11:44

Agree, 2 nights top. It's super expensive (£5 for small water) and busy. Do the steps, cable car, city walls. The Communism / red museum is great for kids.

Bettyscakes · 19/01/2024 12:15

I definitely fid not pay more than €2 for a water if you buy in shops outside the walls!

Lordofmyflies · 19/01/2024 17:26

True. Outside the walls is more reasonable, but we were there in August in 32 degree heat and the thought of battling crowds for 40 mins to get back outside the city walls was too much! It's ridiculously expensive within the city. Also look through the cruise ship schedule - Either go early (before 9am) or after 6pm, because on cruise ship days the population rises by 8,000.
