Somewhere not too hot in August??

We normally go abroad for a holiday in the spring as me & DC burn easily in fierce temps. So I’ve never really looked at August before…we’d like to go abroad but can’t really cope with anything above 30 degrees. DC are 10 and 12, generally enjoy chilling, eating out, bit of exploring…any recommendations?

Southern Germany? Chiemsee area for outdoor activities, swimming and lots to do.

Northern France, Brittany or Normandy

Netherlands/Belgium border area

I would say everywhere south of the Alps will be too warm.

Denmark? We stayed at Lalandia Billund and went to the Lego House.

Annecy might be a good choice. A lovely old town and also areas around the lake, with lots to do. North of French Alps so slightly cooler. It's pricey though

I think a lot of places will be boiling in August. I went to France in early join and they had a heat wave. You will be better looking for a good hotel with shaded beds and good facilities.

The UK is guaranteed to be cool in August!

Favouritefruits · 17/01/2024 17:01

Lanzarote, 0% chance of rain but the winds make the temperature fine sometimes you may even need a thin cardi in the evening, definitely the coolest place with sunshine!

I want to Scandinavia last August as my kids don’t like the heat but it was a bit miserable, it didn’t get above 18 it rained all but one day and was just awful trying to find indoor things to do!

We've been to Es Cana (Ibiza) in August but later in the month. It never hit 30 and we had a nice breeze too. Agree with Lanzarote too for the wind. Stay away from Greece, Cyprus, Turkey etc.

How about a cruise round the Norwegian Fjords? Really beautiful and warm but not hot! My children loved it.

South Germany can easily get above 30 in August (though usually worse in July.) The North Sea and Baltic Sea coasts in contrast should be lovely, especially the islands. Look at Rogen.bsame for Dutch coastal areas - there's plenty of great holiday areas in Zeeland in particular. Or pretty much anywhere in Scandinavia really.

San Sebastián/Galicia Northern Spain.

I believe Mauritius is supposed to be nice in August - mid to low 20s.

Simonjt · 18/01/2024 05:00

It isn’t hot burn, its sun burn, the suns intensity burns, not the air temperature.

Most places will be below thirty unless you aim for places like south east asia etc. Maybe better to think about the type of holiday first, then think about locations that would match it?

DreamTheMoors · 18/01/2024 05:17

Since I’m from California, the Sierra Nevada mountains like Yosemite and Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks are glorious in the summer. Cool and breezy. And beautiful. I’m sure you could find a cabin near a lake to rent, if you’d like.

The California coastline is also very cool but you’ll get burned in a minute.

Where I live in California, it’s always 40C+ in August. Ugh

This sounds great! What company did you use?

I was also going to suggest Norway. It's stunning. If you can't stretch to a fjord cruise, the Norway in a Nutshell tour is really good, self guided, so can be done in a day from Bergen or you can book some overnight stays and do it over a longer period.

Just be aware that eating out etc is really expensive.

Yes it can but I must say it still beats the heat in Greece. Saying that one memorable Summer at the Lake Constance which is normally the most sun proof area in Germany gave us rain and 15 degrees.

I love the North Sea and Baltic Sea but we had lots of mixed weather in the same 2 weeks, same with the Dutch coast. I spent my childhood holidays in Zeeland, unfortunately DH doesn't like the Netherlands.

Scandinavia - not been but friends reported either really hot weather in Sweden or mixed one.

I think it all comes down to what you want to do.
