Vienna how long!

I've truly caught the travel bug in mid 20s and I've slogged for a long time in my career and now I'm looking to enjoy life!

I have some A/L over Easter and I'd like to do a short trip.

Is 3 nights okay? I could do 4 but the less I spend the better!

3 nights is ok if you arrive early and depart late! Plenty to see and do within the Ringstrasse and a bit further out. There are amazing art galleries eg Klimt at the Belvedere. The Schonbrunn Palace is special too. We went to see the horses at the Vienna Riding school practice at the indoor school. Getting performance tickets is difficult but just go in for practice. I tend to use Lonely Planet when I’m going somewhere new. I find their itineraries useful.

You could do 3 nights if you really make the most of your time. Many museums are open late at least one day of the week, so check on this when planning. The Albertina was open until 9 pm on Wednesday when I visited. Had some coffee and dessert in the cafe first, and stayed until close.

I mainly want to sight see and museum tour not see performances etc

Well the Spanish Riding School in Vienna is a “sight”. Maybe look it up?

We went in December for 3 nights and there was plenty do to but also enough time to do it in! Our visit centred heavily on Christmas markets, ice skating, hot chocolates, gluhwein etc but it is such a beautiful city with lots of art and culture that there will be lots to see in April too.

I’d say 3 nights is fine, there’s a city link train from the airport to the central station, which takes about 20 min, IIRC. We left our luggage in the lockers near the station, to maximise sightseeing time :)
Echo the above suggestions for sightseeing, plus the naschmarkt. The underground is a pretty efficient way of getting around (we used it to get to our air BnB,, but we mostly walked.
If you deceide to tag on a day, there are some lovely day trips from Vienna, apparently 😊

We queued for ages to watch the horses practising. TBH unless you are interested in horses it is pretty dull. We found watching them rather underwhelming.

TizerorFizz · 16/01/2024 23:49

@RampantIvy We just walked in. I do like horses but the building is great and unusual to still be in use. We found it interesting but each to their own.

@TizerorFizz indeed.

We got talking to another couple in the taxi on the way back to the airport about the riding school. We said the horses just walked around and kept stopping and it was dull to watch. The woman, very condescendingly said, "you clearly know nothing about horses", which is true. She said it took great skill to make a horses just stop in its tracks like that.

You are right, I just don't find horses very interesting. Other than that we loved Vienna. It is a beautiful city with so much to see.

Rubyandscarlett · 17/01/2024 07:11

It is on my list to do, Austria is so beautiful.

I'm not a horse person, it's definitely something I can skip.

We particularly enjoyed the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Schönbrunn Palace, Prater, the cafes, eating Sachertorte at the Sacher Hotel, the cathedral, the Hundertwasserhaus and generally wandering round the beautiful streets of Vienna.
