Do you think we spend too much on holidays?

Young & childfree. Renters out of choice, deposit invested.

Combined take home after high pension contributions is £7k a month. Large salary increases in the next couple of years.

This year we’ve done:

  1. City Break - £500
  2. City Break - £600
  3. Beach Holiday - £1,200
  4. Adventure Holiday - £3,500
  5. Beach Holiday - £900
  6. Visit friends house - £300

This is just the cost of the travel and hotels. Always in economy, no posh hotels, self cater where possible, and eat in cheap-mid range places.

It's your money. No amount is too much if you are happy.

My guess is that you might be asking because your partner thinks it is too much?

If they are keen to save harder for your own home or simply don't like to travel as much as you those are valid view points too. There is plenty of room for compromise.

If your partner want to save more you could reduce by a bit or if they don't want to go on holiday as often you could take a trip or two with friends or family while they stay at home.

I would like to know how you managed to get a beach holiday for £900! Is it an overseas beach or is it Skegness?

candlelog · 15/01/2024 20:38

Sounds fine to me. Dh and I (one dc) have more trips than that a year and we take home a bit less (no mortgage though).

AnyFucker · 15/01/2024 20:44

Well, I know I do and I don’t care. Going off my parents experience I won’t have too many more years of easy travel so I am getting it all in while I can.

Kangarude · 15/01/2024 20:49

I don’t have your income and I spend much more than that.
If you can afford it, why are you asking?

SingsongSu · 15/01/2024 20:55

What a strange question?
Surely we all spend what we want to/are able to on holidays. How much is too much is massively subjective OP. Why do you want to know what people think? If you’re happy then go for it!

Passingthethyme · 15/01/2024 20:57

Not at all, especially if you don't even stay in expensive places. If you can afford it, do it. Life is for living!

SleepingStandingUp · 15/01/2024 20:58

Is it just a stealth brag op where we all ooooh at home many holidays you've packed in to (two weeks??) the last however long? It's great, as long as your bills are paid and you're happy. I'd splash out on one of your shorter ones tho,go full on pamper. Just try something new! Or really splash out for your adventure holiday and try something really out of your comfort zone

LaCuntiatta · 15/01/2024 21:00

You go on a lot of trips but you don't spend very much on them. I think it's completely fine.

Why are you asking? Was someone IRL saying it was too much?

SLeanne · 24/01/2024 13:59

As others have said, as long as you can afford it and you're not getting into debt, then see this as your indulgence. We spend a lot of our spare cash on holidays but I wouldn't dream of say, employing a gardener or getting a new phone every year. Each to their own.

TeenLifeMum · 24/01/2024 14:09

Initially I thought “that’s a lot of trips but no kids so why not… then I realised we have a similar income but 3dc and so far we’ve planned:

UK city break (dh and I) - £300

beach holiday in school summer hols - £5500

Weekend trip to Dublin - £400

UK city break and concert (me and 3dc) - £900

spa weekend with dd1 - £500

no wonder money is feeling tight this month 😂🙈

ChizzleMeNizzzle · 24/01/2024 14:12

Stealth boast.

Appleblum · 24/01/2024 14:14

No. Amazed you can get a city break for £600.

Chickpea17 · 24/01/2024 14:17

No not all some of the things that you have mentioned seems extremely cheap.
