Hello

I’d really love to take my family to Scotland for May half-term. Is this a good time to go? I have two aged 5 & 9 -any recommendations on good places to stay and close to beautiful scenery/lochs?

Thank-you

May and June tend to be the best months for weather.

Location - I'm a west coast fan, love the islands.

Will you be driving or using public transport?

Can't recommend West Coast in May highly enough. Amazing skies, fantastic scenery and no midges!
Oban area puts you in a good location for a lot of things eg Skye/Mull/ Ben Nevis etc
Easdale Island is just paradise on earth. We stayed for 1 week and DD says it is the best holiday we have ever done

Wow - will look at those suggestions, thank-you

Any Harry Potter fans? Check out times for the train passing over on Glenfinnan Viaduct. Steall Falls also brilliant for their ages.

We loved the beaches out near Mallaig followed by fish and chips and look over the sea to Skye.

Blair Drummond Safari Park is brilliant for kids too. Take bbq food and they'll light you one of their BBQs to cook on free of charge.

Here https://lochinsh.com/accommodation/
It’s in the Cairngorms, small site of chalets, on the edge of a loch. You can walk round the loch through a nature reserve to the the baddendoch trail. There’s a beginner size dry ski slope on site and they do lessons/ hire for toddler upwards (my teens enjoyed it too), an ice rink, kayaking, adventure playgrounds and a decent restaurant. A short drive away (10 minutes) Rothiemurchus is gorgeous for walks, or you could head up the mountain road. There’s also a wildlife park and reindeer centre nearby, probably much more too.
This was the view from our cabin.

I really like staying near Gatehouse of Fleet.

Lovely ice cream place with bikes and rides at cream o' Galloway, couple of castles nearby, great beach and a few hills to walk up.

AyeRightYeAre · 14/01/2024 20:32

Loch Lomind would me recommendation.

Depends where you’re travelling from, but Dumfries and Galloway is amazing. The Gulf Stream warms the climate. Beautiful unspoiled beaches and coves, Southern Uplands and forests for outdoor sports, Lochs for sailing and loads of history.

Galloway, in particular around Gatehouse of Fleet as another poster mentioned, is a hidden gem. We visited in October and loved the unspoilt beauty without huge amounts of other tourists.

Lots to do for families - we did Cream of Galloway ice cream, chocolate factory (on a wetter day!) alpaca walk, feeding wild deer, Zog trail in the Galloway Forrest park to name but a few and the beaches are spectacular. We also found everyone we met really friendly and both kids, 10 and 5 loved it!
