Anyone nervous about Japan now

I'm due to go to Japan 🇯🇵 in June and I know it's irrational but I can't help worry about these earthquakes and subsequent tremors . Also the plane crash .
They haven't had the best start to the year .

I’ve been to lots of quake zones and you should look up the drill and prepare accordingly. Japan is much much safer than many countries on fault lines - look at the destruction in turkey and Morocco. Japan is very safe and a fantastic location to visit. We loved it. Check the drill, and then relax.

I listened to a great feature on radio two recently about how earthquake proof architecture in Japan is of a really really high standard.

Exactly. After so many years they also replace buildings to maximise structural
integrity.

Don’t be nervous you will have one of the best holidays of a lifetime. Lovely people, great food and everything works. Almost no personal crime so you will feel safe and tons to see and do.

No. I went last year, loved it and plan to go back next year. It's as risky as California and people aren't going to stop going there.

I’m a lot more relaxed about the chances of an earthquake now. A big earthquake is less likely now than it was before this earthquake happened. It also shows how earthquake resistant Japan is compared to other seismically active places. This earthquake was a similar intensity and depth to the one in Syria and Turkey which killed 60,000 people. The death toll in Japan is likely to end up around 300. That means the one in Turkey was 200 times more deadly.

I’m going in March-April and not worried. There’s always and earthquake risk in Japan but it’s not any more risky now.

No. Love it!

I’ve been in an earthquake in Tokyo - staying on the 21st floor! The newer buildings have to be earthquake “proof”. It was a really weird sensation as the building sort of swayed. It woke me up but it didn’t scare me.

i’ve also been in an earthquake in California which, whilst not as strong, was much more scary. The windows rattled, the pictures on the wall moved, the swimming pool slopped over and it felt really strong.

Don’t worry about it. Know the drills and put it at the back of your mind.

I was actually in the recent earthquake. We managed to do all our planned day trips, we did bullet train, we did all sorts and was fine. DD and I were like WTF just happened, whilst the Japanese people around us just shrugged and carried on. They dealt with it amazingly.

Japan is an absolutely stunning country, you'll have an amazing time OP.
I lived in NZ and you get regular tremors there, and White Island puffs out clouds of smoke, basically many places lie near fault lines, we just very lucky in the UK to be pretty far from them.
The great thing about Japan is how strict they are with building regs. It's about as safe as you can get, they also have very good warning systems in place.
WRT air travel, it's still a very safe way to travel, again it's highly regulated and any incident or near miss is thoroughly investigated.
You have to remember that our planet is unstable, it's constantly moving and adjusting and blowing out good farts to release the pressure! But most of the time we're unaware of it. The chances of being caught up in volcanic or quake activity is pretty slim when you're visiting a country. The risk of being hit by a car when crossing a road is much higher, but I doubt you lie awake worrying about that?
I remember worrying about snakes and spiders before going OZ, once I got there I didn't think about bitey poisonous things at all, as you just adapt, I think I saw a snake once in the 12 months I was there!

I think Japan is about as good as it gets in earthquake and sunami areas. They are prepared. However old wooden buildings are never going to be earthquake proof. I’ve been to many countries that are on fault lines. I just know it doesn’t happen very often!

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 12/01/2024 09:49

The earthquake risk isn't new - Japan is one of the many countries for which earthquakes are very common, and they are better equipped than almost anywhere to minimise the impact of them. You are no more at risk because of the recent quake than you were before. Just ensure that you're aware of the guidance on what to do if an earthquake strikes. The vast majority of tremors are mild and do no damage.

The plane crash was awful, but it could have happened anywhere. I am much less confident that such a smooth and orderly evacuation could have happened anywhere though.

Japan is one of the safest places that you can travel, and it's a wonderful country to visit. Relax and enjoy!

hattie43 · 12/01/2024 12:07

Thankyou all , you've made me feel better and more confident now .
