Nerja is lovely. If you want to visit Granada / Alhambra the local bus goes from the bus station - takes a while but tickets are cheap. There’s a bus quite early in the morning, the route takes you through the mountains and you can see the sun rise. Early local bus means you beat worst of the organised tour group queues!

TheBirdintheCave · 11/01/2024 12:01

We went for a night (took the bus from Granada) so we could visit the caves. Very much worth it as they were beautiful :)

BikerintheDales · 11/01/2024 13:15

Balcon area is nice and the cobbled street to walk down has the best restaurants. Other than that it's like going back to the 70s.
Went once.. never again.

Yes the caves are worth a visit, particularly if you get a bad weather day.

Burriana Beach is the busiest one but there are plenty of quieter ones if you drive along the coat road towards Malaga.

Boat day is the best day and you can get private(ish) charters from Marina Del Este (about 25 mins drive away) We normally use Sail and Play.

Torrox Pueblo, or The Umbrellas (as we call it) is lovely in the evening. There’s a ‘wally wagon’ up from Torrox Costa some of the year or just get a taxi.

Restaurant wise - Scarletta’s is nice, The Cottage (if it’s still open) has a lovely garden. Antiqua Roma is right on the sea and has a lovely view (ask for a table at the edge of the garden).

There is also a tapas trail you can do which is lots of bars and a bit of tapas in each which is nice. My favourite bar is Los Barilles - loads of lovely wine and flaming chorizo pigs as tapas.

Have a great time!

We love Nerja, and have booked an apartment in the town centre this June. Frigiliana is as easy to get to white town a short trip inland. You can get a bus from what is known as the bus station, but is not much more than a few bus stops. Some lovely restaurants here with super views. At Burriana, go to Ayos for a paella lunch. They cook in on a huge fire and you may get better paella, but it is an institution. You can also go back for seconds if you can manage it. There are a number of recommended tapas trials which you can find with a google which are a fun way to spend a few hours. There are loads of bars and restaurants to choose from. Have a look on tripadviser, we liked the beach restaurant next to Ayos Playa y Sol, or similar, had a lovely steak and sole here, not at the same time. Malaga is a brilliant city and worth a day out, whether for sight seeing, eating or shopping. The Balcon in the evening is magical. Musicians, sunset, ice cream, bars. Its mainly a family resort, so no hen or stag parties. O, there is an Irish bar down a ginnel near the balcon that has brilliant views at sunset, Cochrans Terrace. Don't be put off by the Irish Bar bit, it is a lovely spot.

Thanks so much everyone. Some great ideas here

Frigiliana, definitely. But also here. The lost village of El Acebuchal. Definitely have lunch in the restaurant there (you'll need to book).

Granada/Alhambra are both very much worth visiting, but if you only have 5 nights, I'd stay local to Nerja and do that on another trip. It would be too much to do all that in a day trip from Nerja.

The Lost Village El Acebuchal close to Frigiliana - Andaluciamia

El Acebuchal the lost village, is a hamlet between Competa and Frigiliana in Axarquia Costa del Sol. A wonder to discover.

If you do decide to go to Granada, make sure you book Alhambra tickets well in advance as they sell out.

bjonesreborn · 12/01/2024 15:08

Frigiliana looks great and also the lost village, will def be going there. Thank you so much

For places to eat in Nerja, our favourites are Redondos for drinks and tapas, La Posada Iberico for pork, steaks and simple but authentic dishes. Bakus for superbly cooked food - very popular and need to book in advance. Lovely for a special night out. Also paella at Burriana beach.
A trip to the caves is highly recommended as is a visit to Alhambra/Grenada.
Have a fab time!

The caves. Magnificent.

We did a walk along the Rio chillar river. It was amazing, we waded along in shorts and trainers and ended up in a beautiful waterfall and plunge pool. It was August and boiling though, march might not be so good. Our favourite meal was at restaurant 34. We stayed there and ate there one night right at the front watching. We had suckling pig and pink wine while the sun went down. It was perfect.

What do you mean by 'going back to the 70s?' I'm assuming you mean this in a negative way - but don't understand what you mean ? I would have thought in terms of a Spanish resort this would mean traditional, unspoilt but I don't think you mean that .

Ilovegoldies · 16/01/2024 18:39

I absolutely LOVE Nerja. I think you'll be busy enough but if you are stuck for something to do I'd recommend a trip to Malaga for the day. It's such a wonderful city that we are going for a short break there soon. I think we might pop to Nerja for the day though. I love it that much.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 16/01/2024 18:40

End of March - will you be there over the Easter weekend ? Easter parade is fascinating - although some of the costumes are a bit off-putting when you first see them !

FishPie2 · 16/01/2024 18:57

El Puente restaurant (the Bridge) highly recommended. Have been eating there for over 25 years and still the same owners and lots of the staff. Tapas or full meals. On the edge of town coming into Nerja from Malaga side. (not the prices on there though but is reasonably priced.

Not for easter sadly. We are escaping before the schools break up!!
thank you so much everyone for the recommendations, so helpful. And sounds like we won’t be going back to the seventies after all!!

Watching with interest as thinking of booking either in Feb or March. Is there a significant temperature difference? Any recommendations for places to stay? Is car hire essential?

Work2live · 07/03/2024 17:53

Hi @bjonesreborn and @Slumberlands, appreciate this thread is a couple of months old now, but I’m here at the moment and would definitely recommend March as a good time to visit.

Weather is changeable, but we’ve been here since last week and this has been our first rainy day. Managed a dip in the sea earlier this week! I know someone who was here in January and had some great weather. Definitely wouldn’t rely on sunbathing weather though, it can be breezy, but lovely for wandering about and exploring. Light jacket needed in the evenings.

Much less crowded than in the peak summer season. Only downside is a few bars and restaurants are currently shut, but the vast majority are still open.

We always stay in an apartment near Torrecilla beach - great place to stay imo, a few mins (uphill!) walk to the Balcon, with plenty of bars and restaurants nearby, no need for a car unless you’re staying further out.

Lots of good choices for food and drink, some of our favourites are Unico, Bakus, Papalo, Scarletta’s, plus there are countless excellent tapas bars, plus some really good pizza and Indian places.

bjonesreborn · 07/03/2024 18:19

Thanks @Work2live thats a brilliant update! We fly out on the 19th and are actually now staying for 8 nights. Can’t wait 😃

Hi all! I have just booked a trip to Nerja on my own in November. I am staying around the Calle Maria Victoria panorama apartments, it's in the urban area around 15 - 20 mins walk up the hill from main area of Nerja by the looks of things. What to wear at this time of year where to go, public transport and Taxi recomendations would be very much appreciated ☺️👍
