First time family ski holiday at Easter?

Melawati · 07/01/2024 13:30

We are a family of 4, two teen DC who have each done a couple of school ski trips and would really like to go as a family. DH and I have never skied.
It would have to be the later part of school easter holidays, so April.
Is it too late to go skiing then? Any obvious pitfalls I should look out for? DH and I are up for having a go but it would be good to have to have other options for activities too.
How do I make sure I've booked everything we need - equipment, lift passes, ski lessons etc etc. Are there good companies that would just do it all for us?

Complete novice, so any tips gratefully received.

I’d go to Cervinia. Good snow as it’s high, lots of easy blues, good value.

@Melawati

There is a skiing forum on MN where you'll find several threads that deal with some of your questions > Skiing Forum | Mumsnet | Mumsnet

Here's a relevent thread > Non-skiing family booking first ski holiday? | Mumsnet

As for travelling at Easter - normally this would be quite late in the season, but in 2024 Easter falls early so many more resorts than usual will be open and suitable.

For a first trip, use a ski tour operator (e.g. TUI/Crystal, Nielsen, Inghams) because they organise everything for you - transport, transfers, ski school, ski rental, lift passes etc. so you just need to get yourselves to the UK airport and then let the travel company reps do the rest.

Personally I prefer Austria or Italy to France. You won't need a mega-steep resort or a mega-expensive resort. I'd go to Saalbach, Hinterglemm or Leogang at the beginning of April, but there are dozens of places to choose from. Feel free to ask questions here (or on the Skiing forum) and people will be happy to advise.

In April the most important thing is a high altitude resort and/or north facing slopes so the snow lasts better through the day. It's likely to thaw in the sun then freeze overnight- this can make for icy slopes that are tricky for beginners. Cervinia is a good shout, it's not the prettiest town, but high altitude so as likely as anywhere to have good snow late in the season. Lots of long cruising runs that aren't too difficult, and if good progress is made you can cross over to Zermatt for lovely easy Swiss pistes. The Italian ski schools are friendly, in my experience more so than the French. And it's hospitable too. A decent tour operator will ensure everything is arranged- Inghams are good.

In April I would go to one if the high resorts. Val thorens, Val disere, Tignes, etc.

Yes to Cervinia. Easy transfer from
Turin. Nice wide easy blues. High. We’ve skied there at Easter before. Good value. No point in going for a mega lift pass like Tignes/Val if you’re not going to use it. Hellish transfer too. We just booked a hotel and organised lift passes, skis and transfers through them, then flights separately .

You said later part of Easter hols - when exactly? First week of April is ok - but you need high altitude/north facing pistes. That week has actually been pretty good the past couple of years. Later in April though, I wouldn’t bother, as even with good snowfall it turns to slush so quickly in the pm (and then ice in the morning) especially on nursery slopes which tend to be the lowest pistes.

You just might have a decent week second week of April but it’s very dicey. Definitely no later unless you want to sunbathe more than ski.

Yes there are package companies that do it all - Crystal, Inghams, Skiworld are the biggies. Also lots of smaller operators who will do everything but the flights.

Just thought I would update as we are back from a week in Trysil in Norway which was a great success. Really quick and easy flight/transfer from Gatwick, lovely resort and plenty to keep us all busy. The ski school was great, instructors spoke excellent English and were very friendly.
I ended up booking it all myself rather than going through a package operator as it was just so easy to do and gave us a much wider range of accommodation options so we got exactly the set up we wanted.
all in all a success, dh is already talking about booking next year!
