Transfer from Rome (Fum) to City Centre (Termini) - talk me through it!

Just wondering what the best bet is for this transfer - first thought is train: is this easy, frequent, crowded? Otherwise could book a car transfer or taxi? Am thinking the latter might be expensive! If you’ve done this recently please share your tips!

I would advise the train, we did this in October and it was so easy! The train is comfortable with loads of space for luggage.

We booked car transfers when we went in April, primarily because we were arriving at night and I didn't fancy grappling with public transport. Cost about €60 but worth every single penny. We were picked up with a sign at the airport, got a running commentary tour on the way in, all the sights pointed out, it was fantastic! It was a brand new Mercedes, black leather interior with tinted windows, felt like a movie star! 😂We ended up re-booking them to come take us back to the airport when we were leaving instead of taking the train which had been our original plan.

LIZS · 07/01/2024 10:12

Taxis don't need booking and have a flat fare into the city centre. However if you are staying near Termini take train.

noblegiraffe · 07/01/2024 10:12

We also booked a taxi transfer rather than trying to drag our luggage and kids around - our hotel was quite close to Termini but being dropped off at the door was much better! It was a good start to the holiday driving through the city and seeing some of the sights on the way.

The train is excellent, spacious, clean, air conditioned and easy to use.

onemoretine · 07/01/2024 10:19

If you are staying near the train station I would def get the train. The airport isn't that big and it's a straight walk through to the train station and I remember thinking it was really cheap and quick for the train. There is a taxi rank right outside the train station so I could always do the train then a taxi.

AnnaMagnani · 07/01/2024 10:23

We got a taxi from the rank at the airport. It's a flat fare so the more there are of you, it becomes better value for money and you don't have to lug your luggage about

Taxi driver also helpfully pointed out all the sites on the way.

Thanks for all the quick replies!

@BFG2023 could you share the company you used? How long did it take?

for the train users - how long is the journey and how frequently do the trains run (middle of a week day). Is buying tickets a faff?

want to make the most of a flying visit so just weighing up time/cost factors!

I’ve done it lots using the Flix bus which is easy and cheap (£5ish). Iirc it takes about 40 mins.

PinkPondQueen · 07/01/2024 10:44

We booked Welcome Pick-Ups in advance and honestly they were fantastic, it was about €68 one way if I remember correctly, no idea how that rate compares to the taxis. A real gentleman of a driver & a lovely car, he waited around for us after our flight was delayed a few hours and he was there on the dot for our return trip to the airport

mmgirish · 07/01/2024 10:49

We used the terravision bus to termini. Very easy.

Kerning · 07/01/2024 11:24

Actually from memory you buy your ticket at the ticket office in arrivals not on the bus. The websites have timetables for each service so you can work out which one is the best timing for you.

BFG2023 · 07/01/2024 11:58

@VanCleefArpels we used airportstaxitransfers.com and looking at my receipt, it was €59.04 . Booked in advance through their website and then directly with the driver for the way back. Took about 40-45 mins, and was great to be door-to-door with the luggage.

BFG2023 · 07/01/2024 12:12

Highly reccomend doing a food tour (we did an excellent one around the the Vatican neighbourhood, Prati, that was incredible, with foodtourrome.com, which was cheaper than the ones around the more expensive trastavere area) and getting a guided tour of the ancient forum, palatine hill and colleseum - our tour brought us down on to the arena floor, via the gladiators gate, where other tours limit you to the upper floors only. Highly recommended.

BlindurErBóklausMaður · 07/01/2024 12:50

Train shuttle.
Cheap as chips, efficient, frequent. You can buy the tickets on Trainline, or The Trenitalia app which is also in English. There's the fast Leonardo express which takes half an hour and costs 14 euro, and the ordinary train which takes about 45 minutes and costs 8 euro. They run about every 10 minutes.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/01/2024 13:34

I always got the bus.

budgiegirl · 07/01/2024 17:02

I've done all three - bus, train and taxi (pre-booked)

The taxi was easiest, we were met in arrivals and dropped at the door of our hotel - but it was also the most expensive and scariest - the drive drove like a nutter!

The bus was ok, but it was quite a scrum to get on it - getting your luggage in and then boarding the bus - there were many people trying to get on, and the Italians do not queue. You need quite sharp elbows!

My favourite was the train though - very easy as long as you don't have tons of luggage, it was cheap, and trains ran frequently. We got the local train to Trastevere and changed to a tram, as this took us very near to our hotel. This is the way I would do it again
