Anyone been to the Canaries in February?

Thinking of booking a week away over February half term with our two children (12 and 9) but I’m wondering whether it’ll be worth it. The weather at the moment looks pretty good (about 22 degrees) but I’m worried that the outdoor pools will be too cold and then there won’t be much to do.
If anyone has been on holiday to any of the islands at this time of year I’d be interested to know what it was like. Also if anyone has a good family hotel to recommend then that would be good to know too. TIA.

We've been in Tenerife for the past 13 days (we go home tomorrow)

We have had constant sunshine and today has been our first cloudy day. It's been amazing. Both of us have lovely suntans. It's been 24/25 degrees everyday. Cool in the mornings and evenings.

We've stayed at the Paradise Park in Los Cristinaos which has 4 pools but only the main pool is heated.

We have spent our holiday on the adults only sun terrace which had been bliss.

We're currently in Lanzarote. We've also been during Feb half term and both times it's been sunny. First day of cloud and a bit of rain today but it was nice to be able to do activities when it wasn't too hot! Highly recommend TUI Blue Flamingo Beach. Food is very good, nice villa type complex, beach next to hotel. Pool is a bit chilly for me but kids are ok. Sea is lovely. Good value. Lots of people, like us, are returning customers.

@Ejismyf We went to Cape Verde last year so looking for a change. Agree that the weather is good all year round!

Lanzarote was nice last year at that time, but the pool was absolutely take your breath away freezing cold..... Limited sunbathing, you needed something on your shoulders / legs days as soon as the wind blew. And Lanzarote is windy!

kkelly82 · 05/01/2024 18:53

@BG2015 @MadameMayberry Thanks for the recommendations. Good to hear you’ve had nice weather. I had been keeping an eye on Met office and noticed it was low 20s and sunny so thought that in another 5 weeks time it would hopefully be about the same or even a little warmer.

We went to Tenerife in Feb half term some years ago. We stayed in the North which is typically cooler and has more rainfall than the rest of the island but, in my opinion, nicer as a result. It wasn't shorts and t shirt weather all the time and you definitely needed a jumper on in the evenings but it was pleasant enough, probably low 20s. Definitely not warm enough to swim in the sea or an unheated pool though unless you're a keen cold water swimmer!
We've also been to Lanzarote in November which I would guess is not dissimilar to February weather. Again, warm but not hot. I was training for a half marathon at the time so went out for a run every morning at about 7-8am and it was definitely warm enough to run in shorts but I wore long sleeved tops at thst time in the morning.. The local runners all had tracksuits and wooly hats on and looked at me like I was crazy mind you, but I guess it depends what you are acclimatised to. It felt pleasant to me!

I went and it rained quite a bit and was cold. The heated pool had solar panels so wasn't hot. The day or so when the weather was better was lovely! Apparently we just got quite unlucky. But I would check on what heated actually means.

YearsofYears · 05/01/2024 19:32

Also did Fuerteventura during a Feb half - term. It wasnt hot hot but was incredibly pleasant. Recommend staying in a resort in Fuerteventura as its a quiet island.

muddyford · 05/01/2024 19:35

Did Fuertaventura in December and it was nice and warm. The sea was warm so I expect the pools were. It's off Africa so much further south than you expect.

candlelog · 05/01/2024 21:00

I'd go to Mogan / Puerto Rico in Gran Canaria. It's the warmest resorts in canaries I believe, much less windy than lanzarote and fuerteventura.

Hinty · 05/01/2024 22:15

Currently in Fuerteventura and it's so nice! 22 degrees. We're staying at the Sheraton which has a mix of unheated and heated pools. It also has a lovely beach and we have been swimming in the sea. Totally recommend.

redfacebigdisgrace · 05/01/2024 22:46

Ours were little and we put them
in shortie wetsuits for the pool. Yours might be ok as they’re older. This was Lanzarote in February.

SmashingGemini · 05/01/2024 23:32

Agree that Gran Canaria - Puerto Rico/Amadores area is your best bet. It’s the sunniest and warmest place in the Canaries in February. We go February half term every year. Check out the Gloria hotels in Amadores. Last year we arrived at the airport (further north) to puddles on the ground following rain. By the time we got to Amadores it was bone dry and sunny!

kkelly82 · 06/01/2024 11:28

This all sounds really positive- thanks everyone. Good to hear that most people have had pleasant warm weather at that time of year. I think that would suit us especially as then we’d be more inclined to explore whichever island we went to and not be baking hot! Thanks also to everyone for the hotel recommendations- I’ll definitely look into those.

We went to Tenerife last Feb, it was 20 on the days and on the nights we needed denim jackets. My friend was in Gran Caneria the same time and its was 25 so we’ve booked Gran Caneria for this half term. Either way the weather will be better than at home!

DustyLee123 · 06/01/2024 11:32

When we went at Easter the heated pool was colder than the sea.

kkelly82 · 06/01/2024 13:04

@Prinnny so very true!

Make sure at least one pool is heated (usually it's the activity pool) and consider a thin wetsuit/rash vest if you struggle with colder temperatures. More family oriented hotels are more likely to be suitable

anothernamechangeagainsndagain · 06/01/2024 13:07

I personally liked Costa adeje In Tenerife, plenty to do, good public transport and nice hotels. Public bus available to the airport (close) so no need to pay for expensive transfers

jiskoot · 06/01/2024 13:10

I'm in Tenerife now (South), been here since Wednesday and it's been hot all week so far, 25+, our hotel has one heated pool but the other is cold. Most things seem to be open in our area, not massively busy but bliss in that it's chilled and there are zero sunbed dashes.

crikeyisthatthetimez · 06/01/2024 13:11

We stayed in spring bitcora hotel I would highly reccommend it half board was great. My kids are slightly older but it felt very safe & is modern with slide pool & games room

WonderingWanda · 06/01/2024 13:15

Canaries, especially the northern ones can get a bit windy. Always opt for the south coast and if possible Tenerife as it will be warmer. Some hotels have a heated indoor pool. The pools are bracing in Feb, bit like uk summertime. You could aways get the kids a shorty wetsuit to take.

AnyFucker · 08/01/2024 09:28

I am off to Lanzarote next week for the 3rd time in January and have also been in February. I love me a winter break from the miserable UK after Xmas

If the sun shines (and it will at some point, if not all week) then it is warm enough to sunbathe until about 4pm then gets chilly needing to cover up at night

we use villas with heated pools and find the sea too cold at this time of year

it can be windy, but find a sheltered spot to sit in the sun and you will catch a good tan
