Family holiday accommodation in Amsterdam

Well, I've already bought the flights so I am committed now. Two adults, two teen boys preferably need two bedrooms, the second room needs twin beds or a single and a sofa bed. (It will be better if they are not in the same room) As central as possible.

I think I am searching for the holy grail. Usually book an apartment but they all seem either a bit scummy, are miles out or cost thousands and thousands. Amsterdam is mega pricey. Three nights from the 25th of March. Any brilliant ideas are very much welcome!

I was shocked when we did the same thing booking flights then couldn't believe the price of accommodation. We ended up getting a family room in a youth hostel - 2 bunk beds. It was quite a hip area. Normally we would get a 2 bed apartment. Unfortunately our flight was cancelled at the airport so we never got to see what it would have been like.

I work a lot with Dutch colleagues. Whenever someone is going to Amsterdam, they all recommend staying in Utrecht and getting the train in, because Amsterdam is so expensive.

Do you need to stay in Amsterdam? Rotterdam or The Hague are lovely, 30-45 mins by train so you can still do a day trip to Amsterdam

We went in October and booked Hotel Prins Hendrik on booking.com
its really basic in terms of decor but excellent location, helpful staff and a pub and restaurant on site.
we got a family room for 4 of us but they have twin rooms too.

Are you looking for aparthotel type accommodation?

MrsJamin · 03/01/2024 23:04

We stayed here at the Yotel. It was actually fine and not too far out. https://maps.app.goo.gl/63TJQRYnmwz333DN6 it has availability for your dates 🙌

I booked two twin rooms at the Westcord Arthotel. It's just outside Central Amsterdam but only 15 mins on the 22 bus to Amsterdam Centraal Station.

I couldn't sleep last night thinking about this which is not like me.

I looked at The Hague, Utretch and Delft which confirmed that I want to be based in Amsterdam. I looked at the Centreparcs near the coast but even that was nearly 2000 Euros. If I had money to throw at the problem it would have been easy to solve but this was an extra holiday so cannot justify that level of expense.

Luckily I was within 24 hours of booking the flights with easyJet so cancelled them. I've lost £50 but feel quite relieved. Lesson learnt!

Thank you for all your ideas.

We're staying at chasse residency. A little bit out of town (10 mins in by Uber) but the rooms are huge and it's brand new. Rooms have kitchenettes.

IpanemaCaipirinha · 04/01/2024 08:09

That’s a shame you cancelled as it’s a great city. Flipping pricey though!

We usually stay at a Landalpark and use the train to get around. Have family there so need to go quite often.

Wakemeup17 · 04/01/2024 08:27

Return ticketfrom Utrecht is €25pp, 4x that makes it extra €100 per day which you can add to the hotel budget.
But I see you have cancelled so it's not relevant now.

In case anyone else is looking, it's worth knowing that Amsterdam centre is tiny so accommodation as you've seen is ridiculously expensive.

That said staying 'far out' isn't actually far out as public transport is brilliant and as others have suggested even Utrecht or Delft are only half an hour away. We always joke that in NL if you drive more than half an hour you'll be in Germany.

Hotels like Ibis Budget Amsterdam City South are great - right on the tram line and so only 15/20 mins into town

I blog about Family Friendly Amsterdam (no ads, it's a passion project) so have lots of tips. This post is good for accommodation but elsewhere on the blog are tons of suggestions for what to do and where to eat. Ams is great for families once you've sorted the accommodation

Also bear in mind that Easter is peak peak season as everyone goes to see the tulips/Spring bulbs/Keukenhof although I grant you it's not cheap any time.

DeathWinsAGolfish · 04/01/2024 09:35

We're just back from 5 nights at The Grand Amarth, 5 minutes walk from Centraal Station. DDs aged 20 & 18 had their own twin room, and really enjoyed their stay.

It is an expensive city to visit, but we all loved it especially the fireworks on NYE.

DeathWinsAGolfish · 04/01/2024 09:37

Oops, have just seen that you've cancelled!

MrsJamin · 04/01/2024 10:45

@bridgetjonesmassivepants how come Yotel wasn't to your liking? We liked it, wasn't that far out as you take the free ferry and walk along the coast. A shame as Amsterdam is great.

bridgetjonesmassivepants · 04/01/2024 11:55

The Yontel is far too far out for us.
I can see the appeal but we like to be as close to the action as possible.

I've started looking at the easyJet holidays instead, they have some of the hotels I was looking at and they are cheaper as a package. Also one child doesn't want to come (??!!) so that will make it cheaper. Thinking of the NL city option
