  • DS1 (15) (autistic) doesn't like it if it's too hot, doesn't like sitting on beach, enjoys walking and sightseeing. Not keen on trying new foods.
  • DS2 (12) likes the sun, enjoys a hotel with a pool/sea to play in, not keen on going for walks but is ok if there is something to see/do along the way.
  • DH fairly laid back, likes to relax. Is vegetarian and has coeliac disease so needs restaurants that will cater for him.
  • I quite like doing all of the above. Prefer sun, like to relax but prefer something to do as well. Would be happy doing most things as long as the kids are happy. Nobody likes it when it's too busy, and we're not keen on organised entertainment/kids clubs.

Last year we went to the Lake District which DS1 loved, but DS2 didn't. The rainy weather didn't help! We'd like to go abroad, but have no idea where to start or even what kind of budget to be considering. Any ideas?

We had some similar challenges with a holiday and this place was a hit all round:

It has a small water park in the hotel complex, beaches not too far away and a huge selection of foods including lots of familiar ones.

We took the car and explored the island. Lots of places of interest to visit

In the netherlands also look at Texel, it’s an island off the top so lots of beaches and lots of places to walk/cycle. You could easily combine some time there with some time on the mainland.

Hi there,
my 13y old son is coeliac & struggling to find a European campsite (or hotel!) that has a restaurant on site that can confidently provide gf meals. Anyone had any success? Many thanks, Justine

I think Duinrell would really suit you. We have been many times . So much to do . Water park, theme park, hire bickes and cycle to the beach, hire a car and travel around to many beautiful towns and villages , visit Amsterdam and do Anne Frank, Van Gogh etc.
I recommend the Premium Plus accomodation ( the park's own ). It's excellent. Some have their own sauna.

Scandinavia. Very quiet and beautiful on the coasts, with lovely coastal walks and nice places to swim. Easy to accommodate different eating habits although you should all like seafood if not vegetarian! Gothenburg archipelago would be ideal. Can reach nice temperatures but not crazy hot.

Apparently Italy is very coeliac friendly as a significant proportion of Italians are coeliac. Few places here for ideas. https://camprest.com/en/blog/places-to-visit/a-gluten-free-camping-holiday

OP, here's where we stay in Austria. Self-catering and super comfortable but there are lots of good restaurants around with decent allergy labelling and some good basics (I have picky kids and I found people really accommodating.) We mainly did a shop at MPreis and topped up from the local shop for eg fruit and veg.

The lake in summer is swimmable but never totally warm - the swimming pool across the lake is great.

Edited

Is there a way to see that website in English, please? Probably being a bit dim! And does it switch to summer activities at some point as other alps type places do?

It looks like a possibility for us - mix of requests of pool holiday, cycling, sightseeeing, shortish walks, mild adventure activities like the summer toboggan things. Would this area suit do you think? We were considering French alps again. Kids range from early teens to young adult.

Many thanks.

I just use translate on my phone or desktop - on my iPhone if you click on the Aa bit on the left of the address bar there is a "translate" option. On a desktop I'd just plug the address into Google translate :)

The area gears up really well for summer - cable cars are running and gorgeous walks, the boats run, there are water sports and activities as well as bike hire, high rope courses etc.

Cabin8 doesn't have a pool but lots of the other places around the lake do, and the public pool (Atoll Achensee) is frankly amazing.

Chocbuttonsandredwine · 09/01/2024 18:36

I was going to suggest València, it will be warm but not as busy as Barcelona and so much to do plus by the sea

Leftleg · 10/01/2024 20:38

What about France? There are lots of campsites with mobile homes with pools, near the beach amd towns etc.

AnnaMagnani · 10/01/2024 20:42

Italian lakes. Coeliac is relatively common in Italy so despite being the home of pasta, they are generally really on it for coeliac.

Plus clear rules for the holiday that everyone has a day designed for their interests and no-one else is allowed to moan when it isn't their day.

We used to hire a villa in Pollensa on Majorca. Not Puerto Pollensa which is on the coast with a nice beach - but is much busier and more touristy. My 2 ds spent lots of time playing with inflatables in the private pool and there was usually table tennis too. All villas had bbqs and the local shops/ supermarkets had loads of lovely bbq food. We always chose a villa which was in easy walking distance to the villa where there was a variety of restaurants serving lots of different kinds of food - from Spanish to Italian to burger and chips. They usually indicate the gluten free options.
Its a lovely Spanish village to wander round and there are busier places you can easily drive to.
We are pretty quite on holiday and found it all very relaxing.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 10/01/2024 21:05

The French alps could fit the bill

catered chalets or hotels could work well for DH and some have activities thrown in that you can pick and chose from. Have a look at Alpine Elements

BathTangle · 10/01/2024 21:17

Have similar issues with differing requirements of 2 sons (one with autism traits). Places that have worked for us are Stockholm/archipelago, Swiss train holiday around St Moritz in the Rhaetian Alps/Graubunden, Scotland (Moray), western Algarve and Centerparcs Kempervennen in the Netherlands, with day trip to s'Hertogenbosch.

NotFastButFurious · 11/01/2024 10:44

If some of you like sun and others don't so much then i'd do southern Europe at May or October half term when it's pleasantly warm but not hot hot hot!
Maybe somewhere like Castelldelfels just to the south of Barcelona which has more hotels with pools type accommodation and a beach, but also a train link into Barcelona for city sightseeing.

zeebee · 12/01/2024 17:01

Thanks @JassyRadlett . Sadly due to availability we'd need 2 apartments. At over €8k I think not! And struggling to find other 3 bed accommodation so may look at French alps. Looks like a really great area for the future though.
