Hi, has anyone been away with Canterbury Travel? More specifically their New Year 6 night package. I am wondering if it’s worth the money. It will be myself, DH and DC age 15 and 13. Any advice would be great thanks.

Theres a facebook page dedicated to DIYing lapland. Night be worth asking on there. Lapland Budget DIY Trips. They will talk at length about best areas for what age group etc.

a colleague of mine used Canterbury travel and recommended them (but their children are much younger).

I got married in Lapland via Canterbury Travel (wedding pics ended up in their brochures a few years ago 🤦🏼‍♀️) we found them really helpful, very easy smooth booking process and no hiccups at all. We did the five day in Luosto. All activities were included except the evening lights tour which we booked separately. There's not a lot to do in Luosto at night as it quite remote compared to other venues but we found it perfect for us.

Thank you for the FB recommendation, I’ve joined up now. It seems people are putting a LOT of work into arranging their trips. meadowflower2023 did you find the itinerary very busy? Was there much down time at all?

It was very busy but Wednesday was the free day to have down time and choose what you wanted to do yourselves (we got married on the Wednesday) tbh it's only light for a few hours in the middle of the day so the activities didn't start particularly early or finish late. We did, reindeer sleigh rides, skidoos, Santa visit, skiing and sledding, husky sleigh ride, Santa's post office/elf workshop visit, on the way back to the airport they called at a village shop to get some souvenirs/gifts as there wasn't anything like that near Luosto (Luostotunturi Hotel and Log Cabins)

Yes but you can use all their hard work for yourself!

use the group search facility to search your children's ages. Theres loads of different areas and some are more teen than young child focused etc. Then once you've more of an idea you could go armed with knowledge to
CT.

Canterbury Arctic Adventure? I have done that trip.
Look on Lapland Holiday Chat facebook group. Loads of reviews and photos.

I'd say it was a good trip for older kids, no Santa or people dressed as elves.
Happy to answer any questions

I’ve been on those groups for 2 years and researched extensively before just going with Canterbury travel over Xmas. The groups can be amazing, but they’re also full of extremely disappointed people, because when going diy and something goes wrong you’re pretty much on your own. With Canterbury if there’s anything from an airport delay, to a flat tyre, to itinerary’s having to change due something having to change at a venue, they’ll pull out all the stops and make sure you still get your experience. If you’re on your own then one small cock up can lose you thousands of pounds and potentially ruin your holiday. My dh’s workmate went diy a week before we went and the whole thing went completely tits up because there was an airport and public transport strike. I’d also beware of going with non specialised companies such as tui as the complaints about them are non stop. All of the tui included experiences are 1 minute taster sessions, upon realising people were having to fork out (for eg) between £450-£750 for full husky/reindeer etc experiences, after which tui would then make last minute changes to the itinerary so the timings would no longer work, and then they were losing out with no refunds. Canterbury are bloody expensive but there’s a reason why

Yes very true. I’ve spent all day browsing, my head is spinning now. Thank you very much for your guidance.

@Peoplemakemedespair that's a great post. I wouldn't dare go it alone for that type of trip but obviously lots do.

I echo your last sentence about Canterbury, so worth it. We had no problems whatsoever and it really was magical.

Goggleb0x · 03/01/2024 17:48

I really appreciate your advice. The children have decided they want to try skiing so I’m now, after all the research going to book a ski holiday in Lapland.
