Venice

I am travelling to Venice to meet a friend in a couple of weeks.
How do I get from Marco Polo airport to the hotel? Are there water taxis available on demand?
I looked at the hotel private transfer and it’s 370 euros one way which is a bit steep for me.
thank you

Where's the hotel?

demonheed · 01/01/2024 20:33

If it's in Venice itself just walk out of the airport and get on a number 5 bus all the way to the bus station and walk or vaporetto from there

clary · 01/01/2024 20:37

Yeh you just need to get on the vaporetto. You will probably have to change unless you want to walk a ways (depending on your hotel location). Will cost not a lot.

Or you can get the Alilaguna for €15, various routes so check which one is best for your hotel, but it will take more than an hour.

I’d get the water bus: https://www.alilaguna.it/acquista. then you get to see Venice appearing mysteriously out of the mist like a city from another planet. It’s currently €15 one way or €30 return by the looks of it. It’s signposted from the airport and you wander down wooden walkways for 10 mins or to get to it. Takes an hour or so. Have fun!

It’s really easy to take the Alilaguna. When you get off the plane, follow the signs to the jetties where the Alilaguna dock - a couple of minutes walk. You can buy a ticket from a ticket office next to the jetty. During busy periods you may have to queue for a while - we were lucky and only waited 5 minutes last time. The journey can take anywhere from about 30-40 mins to well over an hour depending on where you’re going in Venice. 15 Euros per person for a single journey, so it’s much cheaper than a water taxi.

Maddy70 · 01/01/2024 20:50

Get the train its the cheapest most efficient way providing you are staying central or use the vaporetto.

AnnaMagnani · 01/01/2024 20:50

Water taxi is lovely but very very expensive. We looked jealously as they went by and never did it.

Vaporetto or bus with everyone else.

Don’t get the train - you have to take a bus to the train station first.
It can be quicker to take a bus direct from the airport to Venice if you happen to be staying nearish to Piazzale Roma where the bus stops. Otherwise, it can be more convenient to take the Alilaguna.
Personally, I think arriving by water is the most appropriate way of arriving in Venice, so would always recommend the water bus unless you are pushed for time or staying near the bus station.

Thanks all, I’m pretty near St Mark’s Square.

I will get the Alilaguna thank you!

Have fun! Best time of year for a trip to Venice.

LenaLamont · 02/01/2024 17:54

The Alilaguna is so much fun! Noth the fastest way, but you see all of Venice as it goes from stop to stop.

Book the Secret Tour of the Doge's Palace if you can, it's far more interesting. Have a wonderful time, Venice is amazing in the winter.

StiffyByngsDogBartholomew · 14/01/2024 01:31

Make sure you sit at the front of the water bus if you can because the orange A route Alilaguna goes all the way down the Grand Canal and it's a fabulous start to your break. It stops just short of st marks at Santa Maria Di Giglio but it's definitely worth the 5 minute walk. We got off there abd then walked to st marks square, i was glad we did that route rather than B that stops at St Marks

its pointless fir the Op to take the train or bus because she will still need to take the vaporetto from the station to San Polo so any time/money she saves will be lost

I'm back to the city in March, I can't wait

Did you get the Alilaguna?

I am going to Venice this weekend and just looking at how to get there from the airport.

Im going on my own, meeting a friend there, so feeling a bit nervous now!

StiffyByngsDogBartholomew · 24/01/2024 17:37

The Alilaguna is really easy, @HelloDaisy. It's well signposted in the airport and you buy the ticket at vending machines at the vaporetto terminal in the airport. There are staff there that manage the different boat queues that will help you. Where are you going to meet your friend ? I'd recommend meeting them at Santa Maria del Giglio which is the last Alilaguna stop on the orange line. This is near st marks square abd the journey takes you all the way down the Grand Canal. It takes about 1.25 hrs but it's a wonderful way to start the holiday to approach Venice on the water; it's really easy, just get on, sit down abd relax until you're in the city. If you get the train or bus, unless you meet in the northern end of the island you'll still need to get a vaporetto down the grand canal so I don't think you save any time or money.

StiffyByngsDogBartholomew · 24/01/2024 17:39

This is the terminal in the airport. It's cheaper to buy a return ticket so that's what I did

Thank you so much, that’s all very helpful information, and has calmed my anxiety!!

StiffyByngsDogBartholomew · 24/01/2024 17:56

The airport is really easy to navigate too abd you'll be through really quickly. Had it not been for under 14yo Dd being unable to use the E gates we'd have been at the ferry terminal within 20 minutes of landing as there were no queues for the E gates. It's a 10 minute walk to the Alilaguna abd you can see the timetable on their website so you can plan your onward travel. Do you have hold luggage or just hand ?

HelloDaisy · 25/01/2024 08:47

I’ve booked hold luggage but as only going for the weekend I doubt I’ll need it!

BarrelOfOtters · 25/01/2024 08:50

We arrived too late for the water bus so got a water taxi…oh my, I felt, even in the dark…that I was in a Bond movie. Fabulous.

as a teenager years ago I arrived by train…it’s not the same.

love Venice, enjoy it.
