Need uk holiday ideas

Kayjay2018 · 01/01/2024 18:55

We are a family of 2 adults a 4 year old and 2 dogs. We holiday in the UK because of the dogs and are wondering if we should try somewhere new this year.

Our usual haunts are Swanage and Whitby. If we love these places, what other uk holiday destinations might we enjoy too??

We will still be visiting Swanage this year as we have family nearby.

MNHQ update: For further inspiration we've put together a roundup of the best UK family holidays featuring Mumsnetter-recommended destinations. We've also got guides to the best UK hotels for families, the best UK holiday parks and the best UK campsites.

Hope this helps Flowers

Pembrokeshire definitely! We did it when our DC was 3 and 6 and they loved it. Beautiful beaches, lots of history (castles etc), lovely places to walk and so much quieter than lots of other destinations. Would highly recommend this place to stay: www.eastblockhouse.co.uk

Tenby in Pembrokeshire is great for dogs. North Beach and Harbour Beach have some summer dog restrictions, but South Beach allows dogs all year round. Dogs are also allowed at Heatherton world of activities which is a lovely family day out.
Also, Southwold in Suffolk if you like Whitby.

I'd second Pembrokeshire. We also love the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall, Bamburgh area of Northumberland, New Quay in Wales, the South Hams (Bigbury on sea area) St Ives Cornwall is also lovely but very busy in summer.

Abersoch, West Bay and Salcombe are all nice.

Ilikewinter · 01/01/2024 20:40

I agree with Wales but will throw in Norfolk - all of it 😁

UsingChangeofName · 01/01/2024 21:08

Virtually anywhere in Wales.
The Gower. Pembrokeshire. Mid Wales. The North West Coast. Anglesey.

Norfolk is also lovely

If you like Swanage, then what about Weymouth, or Bournemouth ?

Kayjay2018 · 01/01/2024 21:42

Thank you for all the ideas so far, not done Wales at all so sounds like somewhere to check out.

@UsingChangeofName I holidayed in Bournemouth and Weymouth every year of my childhood, so know them quite well (and we prefer Swanage). We also pop along to Charmouth for a bit of fossil hunting most holidays 😀

North Norfolk coast. Very dog friendly

Kayjay2018 · 02/01/2024 17:27

@DibbleDooDah do you have any particular areas that are good with access to dog friendly beaches? And any areas to avoid?

Brancaster, Holkham, Burnham-Overy-Staithe and Wells-Next-The-Sea are the best beaches and apart from a few roped off areas in bird breeding season then dogs are allowed off leads. Miles and miles of sandy beaches. Most pubs are dog friendly too - you will need to make reservations a month or two in advance during the peak summer months though. There’s only facilities at Brancaster and Wells though.

I would stay in any of those villages plus Thornham, Brancaster Staithe and Burnham Market (which is about 1.5 miles inland). Hunstanton is a bit run down.

Norfolk is delightful. Northumberland is delightful but maybe too far. Minehead Butlins! Great for 4 yr old. Think dogs might not be allowed. Love Whitby.

BeccaBean · 04/04/2024 08:48

Our favourites are North Norfolk Coast and Kent Coast, particularly Broadstairs (beautiful beach and coastline, lots of nice places to eat and not developed although quite busy. Can also drive to Kent castles or Canterbury on a wet day.)

Have a look at Shropshire

Lovely towns and countryside, a few stately homes, and the Ironbridge Museum is fabulous and could easily take two days to go round all the sites.

It seems overlooked as a tourist destination for some reason but really does have a bit of everything.

OatFlatWhiteForMe · 04/04/2024 17:42

I love Whitby - I also highly recommend North Berwick or St Andrews.

Lulu1919 · 04/04/2024 17:58

Dartmoor

hellothere247 · 04/04/2024 22:41

Dorset is lovely, we stayed in a campsite near west bay that was nice.

Somewhere like Salcombe in Devon? Some places in Devon are less nice though.

If inland, Peak District, Lake District or Cotswolds. Love them all!

Thewolvesarerunningagain · 04/04/2024 22:56

Whitby is my absolute happy place. I also recommend North Wales near Caernarfon, which gives you access to Anglesey and Eryri (formerly Snowdonia) National Park. So much to do, so easy to do it! ❤️ Also recommend Saltburn (the place not the film, at least for the under 18s) in the NE. The Lakes. What’s not to love especially if you keep clear of Windermere/Grasmere/Peter Rabbit land and explore some of the less busy areas. Derbyshire has amazing walks and stunning landscape. It may be less advertised, but we’ll worth digging into to get

Kayjay2018 · 06/04/2024 21:33

These are great - thank you. Currently have Whitby and Swanage booked so think these ideas will form part of 2025 holidays
