Iceland May half term

Hi all
We’ve been dithering about May half term and OMG flight prices to most of Europe are ridiculously expensive!
Iceland is on my bucket list and there are some reasonable prices BA flights which are super tempting! We’d prob book a car and we’d have 7 nights. Does anybody have a suggested itinerary so I can research hotel prices before I go ahead and book please? Thank you! Oh and is May a good time to go?

You can enjoy extra flexibility and save money by renting a camper van. If that's your kind of thing - I don't think I would myself because I don't think I'd enjoy it as much, but there are definite upsides that I can see and I know some people rave about it as a way to explore Iceland. You're never far from a pool for a nice proper shower.

Whats your total budget including flights and hotel?

PenguinLove1 · 31/12/2023 23:02

Have you looked at cruises there? They can be really reasonable as they include food/some drinks etc.

Thanks again everyone. We’re now debating given the eruption and Insurance! @Puffinshop thanks, but like you not sure about a camper van! @PenguinLove1 really don’t fancy a cruise but thank you! Our total budget is prob max £3k but ideally less! Flights and car hire really reasonable atm
, it’s accom that’s the issue. Maybe we need to leave it and come a different time of year. Is May expensive?

We went in May half term last year and we stayed in central plaza hotel. It was fine, massive buffet breakfast and good location.

There's no eruption at the moment. It might start again soon but it'll be on Reykjanes and it won't affect tourism. May is so far away that it is impossible to say what will be happening then.

I don't think you will find any other time of year is particularly cheaper. If you are doing Iceland on a budget then don't stay in Reykjavik and take any tours. Instead get a car (make sure you have 0 excess insurance), stay in cabins (look on airbnb, etc) and self-cater.

Hi all
We didn’t end up coming in May but I did get an IOU voucher for an Iceland trip for my birthday and we’re now considering going in March for 3 days just my husband and I. I know it’s going to be cold and that we have to be prepared to change our plans but is it crazy to think that if we land at 10am we could pick up a car and drive up to the Fosshotel Reykjolt via the peninsular for the night and the following day do the golden circle tour? Or would we be better staying our first night in Reykjavik then doing the peninsular and golden circle tours over the next 2 days ( albeit we need to be back at the airport on the final day by 430pm) ? Or are we crazy to think we can do all of that and need to rethink?! Thanks so much!
