Thinking of doing a road trip of Croatia and Bosnia.

I have been to Dubrovnik and Pula and loved both. Has anyone been to Zagreb, Split, Mostar or Sarajevo? How long would you recommend to spend in each. We love sightseeing and walking tours of cities.

Mostar is really beautiful, but you can easily see it in a day - we did 2 nights and 1 full day and it was the right amount I think.

Sarajevo is one of my favourite cities I've ever visited. In 2/3 days you'd be able to see a lot of the sights but if I went back I'd want a little longer - it's really cool to hang out in, lots of great bars and restaurants and everything is really cheap,

I’d say 2-3 nights in Sarajevo, 2 in Zagreb, 1 in Mostar ( though doable as day trip from Split). Then whatever time you have left day tripping to the various islands around Split. Each island feels different. The war museums in Sarajevo are harrowing but well worth seeing.

We did a road trip from Zagreb to Cavtat at the end of May the year before Covid. Took us 3 weeks. We wanted to go into Bosnia but got stuck at the border for ages so turned around and gave it a miss which was disappointing. Think we had 2 nights in Zagreb. Did a free walking tour which was excellent and ate Strukli. We went on to Rovinj, Plitvic Lakes(go very early or late to miss the crowds) and Split, very busy but great for ferries to some of the beautiful islands and finished in Cavtat, very pretty but expensive with aircraft noise. Brilliant holiday. Picture postcard views at every turn.

Just about to head off next week. We don't seem to be able to pre-order currency for Bosnia, does anyone know if most places accept Euros? Just seen Croatia uses the Euro now rather than Kuna.

Easy to get money out or change money in Bosnia if you are in Sarajevo or Mostar. I love Sarajevo - easily my favourite city of all time. Try and rent a car and get out into the mountains for a day to drive from Sarajevo to Mostar - its unbelievably stunning

Zagreb is worth 1 or 2 days.

Thank you. We decided to do 2 days in each place: 2 days in Sarajevo, train to Mostar stay for 2 days, flix bus (3 hrs) to Split for 2 days, then flix bus (4 hrs) to Zagreb for 2 days.

Just back from our trip. We had a great time and had glorious weather.

Sarajevo: A really interesting city with a mix of architecture. Lots of mosques and Turkish influences mixed with Austro-Hungarian buildings. It is hard to believe there was a terrible war and siege of the city that lasted 1425 days only 30 years ago. 11,000 people were killed in the city of Sarajevo. It was the anniversary whilst we were there, so there was lots of going on in the city that made our visit very moving.

The train journey (£6) to Mostar took 2 hours and was absolutely stunning. Beautiful mountains, lakes and villages all the way.

Mostar was wonderful. Such a beautiful city to wander and admire the views. We loved the walking tour, watching the bridge jumpers and enjoying coffee and batlava. Mostar had a different pace and was so chilled. Our photos of the Old Bridge at night are stunning.

Our journey to Split was long and twisty (4 hours). The city again was beautiful, warm and with an interesting history. We loved the marina and hiking in the hills. The ice cream at Emilio's was the best I have ever tasted. Can recommend the greek yogurt mango and passion fruit flavour! The evening street music in the old town was wonderful and atmospheric.

Zagreb made a nice end to our trip. We enjoyed the city tour, the market, parks and the 'museum of broken relationships'. Evenings in the city had such a lovely atmosphere.

All 4 places felt very safe and welcoming. Bosnia was very cheap with meals costing about £5. Split was the most expensive with an evening meal being £20+. I would recommend all the places we visited. 2 days was enough in each but could have stayed in Split longer!

@Cranmer , would you mind sharing where you stayed in Mostar? DH and I are going to Bosnia at the end of June and planning the train and overnight stay in Mostar from Sarajevo.

We stayed in The Happy Apartments. The accommodation was about a 3 minute walk from the bus and train station. We were leaving on the 6.45am bus to Split so wanted to fall out of bed onto the bus! The apartment had a full kitchen, large bathroom, one double bedroom and lounge area with Netflix. It was a 10 minute stroll to the old town mostly along a pedestrian avenue.
