Has the price of package holidays gone up?

By a lot?

I took my son to an all inclusive 7 nights stay, to Tenerife, for £890 in 2019/2020.

The price I'm looking at paying for me and 2.5 year old DD is £800 at the very least, just for 4 nights?!

I'm only looking to do 4 nights but I'm a bit shocked it's so much, the same price as an all inclusive 7 night stay from 2019/2020.

I can hire a villa for a week for £900... fair enough it's self catering but at least you've got your own pool!

I have been looking at the same 10 break we did last Feb, for this Feb, and it’s £1k more.

I didn't even say what time. Silly me.

Looking at beginning or middle of May. So not school holidays.

Yet I took DS away much closer to breaking up for school holidays and it was still cheaper than definite term time price?

Yes. Thousands of travel companies and hotels came out of the pandemic in dire financial straits, if they were lucky enough to come through it at all. The debts they ran up have to be repaid somehow, and the post-pandemic travel consumer is more demanding than ever, so maintenance and upgrades need paying for.

The era of bargain travel is over, for a while at least.

Yes, massively
We went away in the summer hols this year, having booked 9 months of earlier

While we were there, we looked at rebooking for 2024. Even with the 10% loyalty discount the hotel was offering, it was nearly 50% more than we had paid. Partly because of the pound vs euro exchange rate being awful, and partly because of inflation/CoL

Loads! I can’t afford to go on hols abroad this year. We looked for the exact same holiday as last year for 2024 and it was around 1800 more expensive!

Ahh, yes. I forgot this would've been pre pandemic!

I suppose cheap travel really is a thing of the past.

I think I will go for it anyway. I would tell myself 4 days is enough with a toddler but I really enjoyed it when I took my son away.

Just us 2, change of scenery and pool/beach constantly. Lovely.

I suppose the villa is cheaper to rent in comparison to a package because it's not a travel company or chain, it's private

yep! That was my face too!! The flight times and everything were roughly the same too!

Fairyliz · 27/12/2023 15:42

Yes I read somewhere that holiday prices had increased 30% since last year but demand is also increasing.
What COL crisis?

Elfon · 27/12/2023 17:15

I read that the British market is resilient but in the rest of Europe bookings are dropping so there might be some bargains if you leave it later.

CyberCritical · 27/12/2023 17:21

Sometimes 4 nights ends up being more expensive than 7 for some reason, I'm not really sure on the logic but assume its something to do with the flights being at more inconvenient times because you can afford to lose a bit more of driest and last day on a longer break.

ReallyLazySusan · 27/12/2023 19:13

Actually I haven’t found this to be the case, it must depend on where and when you go. I’ve just double checked our bookings for the last three years - we go to the same resort in the Balearics for the first two weeks of the school hols every year. Always book a package of flights and 3* self catering apartment with either jet2 or TUI so I would say it’s a fair test. Family of 4.

We paid £3,340 in 2021, £3,435 in 2022 and £3,865 this year, although schools broke up later this summer which pushed us into August and inflated the price.

rookiemere · 27/12/2023 19:29

Check prices with Easyjet holidays as they tend to be a bit cheaper. Also play with the dates, we ended up going for 8 nights as it was only £50 in total more expensive than 7 and as the flight didn't leave until the evening we got a whole extra day and a half.
