...any advice, recommendations gratefully received. For once, Google is not my friend and I can't find anything remotely suitable.

We'd like to go early September. Just me, DH and our son who will be one month short of 2 years old when we travel.

We looked at going to Sweden and found some good farm type stays.
And it wasn't expensive to fly to Oslo and drive over the border.
I iwll try and find a link,

Someone else on MN recommended this.

we stayed here in Norway, about 7 yrs ago. It was lovely and not extortionate-loads to do in the area, and very child friendly. We were self-catering which kept the costs down quite a bit, and took our own wine boxes .

pretty sure we went with Hoseasons, or someone similar, but can't find the package at the moment; will keep looking.

For Sweden don't discount the youth hostels - they aren't youth hostels as we understand them, and typically families use them. There is a difference between youth hostel and backpacker hostel though obviously. The IYHA will have more info.

Public transport in Sweden is fabulous, and cheap. Consider staying slightly further out of the cities to cut costs, and using the PT system to get in. Some amazing places in the archipelago.

DFDS do holidays, travelling by ferry/ car we stayed in the Sognefjord area, but can't find our holiday park in this brochure. IIRC, drive from Bergen to park took about 2 hours.

You can go HERE Tromso is just above the polar circle, a unique experience, but still quite warm. If you go earlier you may still catch the midnight sun, if you go later, you may catch the northern lights.

Norwegian is a low cost airline that flies direct from Stanstead.

Thanks everyone. I told DH that mumsnet would come up trumps. Now we have to make a decision about where to go...

only ever made good experiences in Denmark. Very nice and welcoming to children and generally laid back. Haven't always been luck with the weather though, it can rain a lot.

Quite fancy Norway myself but dh reckons it's too cold.

We went to Fanø (Denmark) two years ago which is quite easy to get to from the UK - you can get to Esbjerg either by Ryanair or by ferry and then take another ferry to Fanø

The holiday was quite low key but incredibly relaxing. Spent most of the time cycling around the island and playing on the lovely beaches. Dc have very fond memories of that holiday and I'm very keen to go back sometime. We were quite lucky with the weather but it wasn't exactly tropical. Can be very windy too.

Booked through this site which is probably cheaper than doing it through any UK operator. Stayed in a lovely cottage, with just a short hop over the sand dunes to the beach. It's cheaper if you go towards the end of August as it's no longer peak season.

Oh, and if you do go to Denmark, try the liquorice ice cream
