Any cheaper ways to do Lapland?

I'd love to take the kids to Lapland for a couple of days next winter. However we priced up a 2 day trip and it's coming up at 5k for two nights for us as a family of 4 with 'Santa's Lapland' (half board, including excursions such as Husky ride and reindeer trip). I know it's never going to be a cheap trip but has anyone managed to do something similar for closer to the 3k mark?

Have you looked at going to Rovaneimi earlier than December... maybe to deliver letter to Santa himself?!
Could be a lot cheaper

There's a fb group called budget lapland. Worth a look. Its easy to diy.

Easyjet and ryan air fly to various places in finnish lapland. Loads of ai bnb's. Car hire. The basics can be cheap. Then look up activites and be selective with what you do.

Do it yourself rather than a package. I think things are definitely more expensive now though unfortunately. We're going back in Feb having been in Feb 2019.

Back then 5 of us flew with Finnair to Ivalo via Helsinki for £1k. This time we're going Ryanair to Rovaniemi and all the joy that brings with luggage and seats and it is costing just over double that. Going to Ivalo again would have been around £4k so not happening!

However, you can find very reasonable self catering accommodation. There are easy and reasonable bus transfers from the airports. As flights are not that frequent the buses are timed with flights so you are not waiting around.

We spent a whole week in Saariselka. Nice little lodge that slept 5 with a private sauna and open fireplace. Sledges included in the shed. We walked around the forest, did lists and loads of sledging. Stuff like snow tubing at the ski village was free. You can book activities from local providers there but there is loads to do even without lots of activities. Cooked our own food so we didn't have to spend money eating out.
All in all it was very reasonable and we did the whole week for less than a package would have cost for 3/4 nights.

As I say flights have definitely gone up which is the killer but the accommodation we've booked for this time is still very reasonable.

Definitely book it DIY to save money. I did so much research!
We went last year, I booked flights on release day in the summer (July) they cost just over £600 rtn for 5 of us (2adults, 3 teens) from Bristol to Rovaniemi (December for 6nights & flew home on Christmas Eve)
We did 2 nights in a hotel, 4 in an airbnb log cabin in Levi. We skied, went ice-karting, husky sledding, hired snowmobiles, sledged, saw the northern lights, visited Santa Claus Village & spent just over £4k in total including food.
It was one of my favourite holidays, we all loved every minute of it.
Have a look at the Facebook pages, they're so helpful!

Irish Influencer Grace Rhatigan ( Frilly Flossy) has an Instagram page/story about visiting Lapland on a budget that is worth checking out..

I don't know but could point you in the direction of Iceland, would that do?

GrumpyPanda · 20/12/2023 01:02

You don't say which part of Lapland you're interested in or what time of the year. For the northern lights the best time of the year is actually in February which gives you more daylight and better weather overall. It's also the season for the famous Sami fair in Jokkmok. Haven't been myself but friends have, extensively. I believe you'd fly into Kiruna, with the majority of connections domestic out of Stockholm.

Some great tips here thank you. Was thinking of the Finnish area of Lapland. Would love to do a Husky sledge and a reindeer ride.
