Would you fly on a Boeing 737 Max 8?

They are approved in the US (and maybe some other places) and we are due to fly on one soon. They say the software issue has been fixed, but clearly, they can be wrong about safety. Other flights/ airlines are available but with less ideal flight times.

I don’t feel great about it. Would you go or switch to another airline?

I’m always a bit uneasy about flying so I wouldn’t- it would add extra stress.

LividSleep · 16/12/2023 19:51

I have no idea what issues you’re referring to so probably.

Pupsandturtles · 16/12/2023 20:15

@LividSleep the Max was the model of plane involved in the two crashes in Ethiopia and Indonesia, due to faulty systems. Even after the first crash, Boeing assured everyone that the plane was safe.

No.

CoatOfArms · 16/12/2023 21:27

Yes. Because I have close relatives who work in the aviation sector and know just how important they take safety.

Cicciabella · 16/12/2023 21:28

Depends which airline

Chewbecca · 16/12/2023 21:29

I never know what plane I am flying on, so yes. But I wouldn’t fly with a ‘dodgy’ airline company so I guess I am trusting the company & their checks and maintenance vs the plane itself.

DustyLee123 · 16/12/2023 21:29

I thought they were already being used here?

Was it perhaps more to do with the airlines than the planes?

Missflowers1981 · 16/12/2023 21:35

I thought they were already used here too? Unless I was mistaken. - last year on a Ryan air flight I thought I saw 737 max when seated inside the airplane on a board near the door and did have a moment where I also thought about the crashes on Indonesia and Ethiopi.

I’ll admit I did have a uneasy moment as I had watched a documentary on the lion air crash. But figured it had prob all been fixed and was fine.

It made sense that Ryan air had these planes as I think they were more for short haul flights? Lion Air was also a budget airline.

ZeroFucksGivenToday · 16/12/2023 21:36

It was definitely the planes. Boeing knew there was an issue and ignored it.

id be wary, but I'd also recognise that these planes have been crawled all over and the FAA have spent thousands of hours on reviewing the issue/the fix and satisfying themselves they're safe to fly.

DustyLee123 · 16/12/2023 21:38

It wasn’t the physical plane that was the problem, it was the computer within it. Not that it makes it any better.

ZeroFucksGivenToday · 16/12/2023 21:40

@DustyLee123 yes sorry. It was an altitude sensor and the plane computers read it wrong. But I referred to that as the plane. Rather than it being an airline issue.

PamelaParis · 16/12/2023 21:40

It wouldn't even occur to me to check what type of plane I was flying on, so yes.

CrackSpackle · 16/12/2023 21:43

Air Canada, yes, other airlines, no. AC bought both of the software "upgrades" (fixes) but not all airlines did.

CrackSpackle · 16/12/2023 21:47

They call them "optional safety upgrades" Envy

JustWhatWeDontNeed · 16/12/2023 21:49

I'd rather not but it transpires that I am next year. I only noticed after I'd booked. Apparently the airline has complied with all the required upgrades etc.

It's a short flight, so I shall, as ever, hope for the best.

Perfectlystill · 16/12/2023 21:53

Which airlines fly these planes on which routes?

Schum · 16/12/2023 22:29

I have flown on Ryanair 737 Max many times so yes.

EasterIssland · 16/12/2023 22:31

I’m meant to fly In one next year. I’ve not heard the news about the accidents. When have they happened ?

EasterIssland · 16/12/2023 22:34

Just seen if was 2017 and 2018. More than enough time to investigate what happened and fix it. Do you tend to worry when flying op? I do quite a lot but I tend to think many airplanes fly everyday and there aren’t as many accidents. I’m more likely to die of a car accident than an airplane one

for those who hadn’t heard about the 2018 and 2019 crashes.

there is a Netflix documentary called Downfall: the case against Boeing

boeing put profit over people when developing the planes but it’s been so high profile I hope (assume) the issues are fixed so I probably would fly on one now

NoTeaNoShade · 16/12/2023 22:39

I flew 737 max on Ethiopian Airlines a year or so after the Ethiopian (where I lost a friend) and it was fine.

Pupsandturtles · 16/12/2023 23:16

Really sorry to hear that, @NoTeaNoShade

It’s mostly because Boeing behaved really poorly- they should have grounded all the MAXs after Lion Air- and I’m not sure I trust them to have properly upgraded the issue. Interesting points about the ‘optional upgrades’- I will research this more. Thanks for that info, posters above

Are these used all Ryanair routes ? Think we may have flown this type of plane in November . Would have worried if I'd realised but all was fine.
