We are going to Spain in early April and my passport expires in June. Will I still be okay? Someone tolf me that you need to have 6 months left on it. (In which case, what's the point of an expiry date??!)

It just needs to be valid on entry and exit from Spain, as long as you are an EU national.

It's usually USA who insist on 6 months still to run on your passport, and everyone knows their immigration people are nuts.

You'll be fine for Spain. I have done this twice in last couple of years (my passport once, ds's the other time - neither had more than 3 months on).

Slight hijack here, but my dd is due to go to France with the school in May, and her passport will just have expired (by just a couple of days). However, they are travelling on a group passport, which lists their passport numbers and shows a photo, so wondering whether that will matter - any thoughts?

piratecat · 13/03/2008 14:48

I don't think so.?

My dd's passport was about to run out end of oct last yr and we were going to france beginning of oct. Travel agents said she could not travel on it from 6 months before it ran out.

def has to have a 6 month validity 'after' the date of return.

arses, just makes you have to cough up money before you need to doesn't it.

prettybird · 13/03/2008 14:53

If you apply for a new passprot now, theyt will supply you with a new one with its term (5 years for a child) calaculated from the date of expiry of the old one.

Essentially if you apply for a new passport within 6 months of its expiry, you will get that period added on to the new passport.

Re the OP, I ouwldn't think it would be a problem for Spain, but for foof, I don't think it owuld be OK for her dd - but she's got time to get it replaced.

foofi · 13/03/2008 14:57

Thanks Prettybird - it worries me because if I get her a new one now, it will not be the same number as the one shown on the group passport. However, in all likelihood, they probably won't check a large school group passport in that kind of detail [hopeful].

prettybird · 13/03/2008 15:05

If you get a new passport, they will send the old passport back with the corner cut off. She could then take both passports with her.

Alternatively, ring up the passport office and ask them.

BTW - I have travelled plenty of times in Europe with less than 6 months validity on it.

Thanks so much. piratecat 'def has to have a 6 month validity 'after' the date of return.' Do you mean for Spain?

Travelling to non EU countries can be more problematic and require additional validity but EU countries are fine within valid period. In fact technically you only need photo id but in practice that it is a passport.

Thanks LIZS.
