Hi does anyone have any suggestions for fun days out with my ds (2) we are going to Lake Windemere Easter Monday for a week and was wondering if you know of any fun things we could do, family friendly restaurants preferably with play areas and soft play just in case the weather is grotty/
TIA

Sea Life centre at the southern end of the Lake, Has lovely otters and other, er, sea and indeed lake life.

There's a little train and boats trips start there and some other indoor stuff I think.

I think there's also a Beatrix Potter centre past Bowness but I've never been to that.

The Piano Bar in Ambleside has a soft play area in it (I think!) - otherwise you will struggle for soft play places in The Lakes I think (there is one in Barrow but it's a bit of a drive from where you'll be). Ambleside is a nice place to potter round in itself. There is a big garden centre there called Hayes - ask anyone for directions because everyone knows it. I think there is a play area outside there and it's a massive garden centre with nice gifty type shops in and also a cafe - nice for a potter round if it's wet.

There is Aquarium of the Lakes at the side of Windermere - quite expensive though I think. From here you can take a ride on a little steam railaway - it's the Lakeside and Haverthwaite railway. That's quite sweet and not expensive. At the other end of the line from the aquarium there is a tea room and lots of old engines in teh yard if your dc is into that?

Also from lots of points on Windermere you can get a boat trip.

Fell Foot Park is a NT place on the otherside of Windermere - it's lovely there - nice play area, little cafe, nice place to walk round. From there you can get a very short boat ride over to the other side where the aquarium is - it's only £1 or something.

Bowness-on-Windermere is a really nice place to go around as well - again, you can get a boat trip from here (e.g. to Ambleside or back to where the aquarium is). I think you can do an open top bus ride here and there is also the Beatrix Potter place (although it's not cheap).

If you fancy doing a walk and you've got a car to get to it - Tarn Hows is a nice walk to do with children. At one end of it there is a little stream that is really shallow and lots of children potter about in there with their wellies or crocs on. There are no toilets there (but lots of trees!) and there is usually an ice cream van in the car park.

Will that do to start off with?!

there's a nice adventure playground at Fell Foot park, southern Windermere

Dalton Animal Park (near Barrow) isn't so far away....but really neither are much help for grotty weather. There are soft play areas in Kendal but I don't know about the lakes. Sorry.

There is a really cool shop in Ambleside (I think) that specialises in kids outdoor stuff - I could have spent a lot of money in there

www.outdoor-family.co.uk/ is their website

Monkeybird · 13/03/2008 14:46

Grizedale sculpture park not too far and the visitor centre their is reasonably child friendly from memory. Some quite long walks in the sculpture park though so be prepared

Novice ... where is the piano bar ? I haven't come across that one.

Most of the bigger villages have some fabulous parks too.

Novicecamper · 13/03/2008 14:49

Another good place for your ds is Brockhole - there is a huge outdoor play area, you can get boats from here (do you see a theme?) and inside there are loads of interactive activities - a bit like the science museum.

Brockhole

We have had mumsnet meet ups at both Brockhole and Fell Foot - they are both greast places to go with kids.

HerReasonableness · 13/03/2008 14:49

I think Fell Foot Park has a little sort of assault course - DS was too small to play on it last year but would probably scramble on some of it now - DH and I took turns on the mini-zip wire

Novicecamper · 13/03/2008 14:50

The Piano Bar is tucked right in the corner of the the little raised up square bit where Fat Face is.

Novicecamper · 13/03/2008 14:52

Dalton Wild Animal Park is fabulous if you don't mind driving out to it. It's a great zoo and has a little train to ride on too.

katwith3kittens · 13/03/2008 14:57

Oooooohhhhhh right .........

Well I never knew that ... definitely passed me by that

Can't really say I'm keen on soft play though when there are so many other alternatives ! but its always handy to know about these things.

Do you have regular meet ups then ?

girlfrommars · 13/03/2008 15:02

The Aquarium is really good.

Notyummy · 13/03/2008 15:17

Aquarium is alright, but will only last an hour (2 at max) and cost three of us (me, DH and 19 months old dd) at least £15 to get in when we visited last month. Bit steep for somewhere that small.

cazzybabs · 13/03/2008 19:28

what about grizdale forest?

DrNortherner · 13/03/2008 19:31

Rheged is a fab day out for kids. Indoor and outdootr play, plus lots more!
