Budapest: which side to stay ?

Myself (50’s) plus one offspring (20’s)

We like history, being in the middle of everything, cosy bars and local eateries.

What do folk recommend please?

We stayed on the Pest side, quite near the Jewish quarter and St Stephens Basilica.
Great place, loads to do.

Creepybookworm · 30/11/2023 21:19

I would say Pest.

Pest is a good location to stay in and has lots of hotels, restaurants, etc. Make sure to explore Buda Old Town, short walk over the river.

Another vote for Pest.

When I went to Budapest 30 years ago I was told by a local that I had to stay in Buda to be closer to heaven, and that Pest was closer to hell. Make of that what you will.

Pest, and then you have the views of the castle.

Thanks all

Yeah I’d stay on Pest side too. I recommend doing a boat trip on the Danube. The city is beautifully lit & it’s a nice, budget friendly way to spend an hour.

At night you should head to Gozsdu Udvar for lots of food and drinks places all in a narrow courtyard style street. Nearby is Simpla Kert & Instant ruin bars that are good fun. Next door to Simpla Kert is Karavan which is a cool street food place. A friend also recommended Mazel Tov restaurant, but I didn’t get the chance to go there.

I vote Pest too. We also stayed in the Jewish quarter and it was really close to Buda but Pest is where there are loads of great restaurants, shops, ruin bars and sights.

Download the Budapest Go app and it will help you to navigate public transport. We got a 72 hour pass and it allowed us to use the trams trains and buses. The number 2 tram is incredibly scenic as it takes you past the Hungarian Houses of Parliament and along the Danube.

Stika restaurant is amazing for breakfast. We loved Trofea too which is all you can eat and drink for £30. It was all branded drinks and a good selection of hungarian food too!

I went there earlier this year and would definitely say visit Buda and stay in Pest but do a bit of research so you are not staying too near the ruin bars. I stayed on Kiraly Street and I'm not exaggerating when I say we were kept awake til practically morning every night of the whole week. I have never been so tired on a holiday!

I went with my adult son and we had a great time, loved exploring the city and surrounds but my word we were shattered by the end of the week.

Stay in pest visit Buda

OrangeWoolCardiWrap · 03/12/2023 23:52

We went in October with our 16 year old son. We stayed at the Hard Rock Hotel in Pest and walked everywhere. I watched some YouTube travel vlogs in advance and got some great ideas for daily itineraries.

Did anyone on here have any issues with taxis as they seem to have a bad reputation? We went to the taxi booth at the airport for a ticket and then the hotel reserved a taxi for us for the return trip to the airport; otherwise we walked everywhere - OP: take trainers!

A PP mentioned Karavan. Totally recommend it. But take a warm coat.
