Is Cornwall worth the expense?

We usually go for a week to Antigua in February and rent a flat or villa. This year we’re thinking of skipping that trip and having an extra one in the UK summer.

We were thinking of renting a house in somewhere like Flushing or Rock or Saint Ives

It is very expensive, but we prefer to stay in upmarket areas. Is Cornwall worth the expense?

Definitely not for me. And definitely not if I had to give up a holiday in Antigua for it.

There are nice enough places to visit in Cornwall, but it's not different enough to anywhere else to justify the expense, and it's such a long way from everywhere. I'd go to Dorset if I wanted a UK holiday at the coast.

HeliumChestedTrollop · 29/11/2023 13:03

we found it rained a lot so gave up going now only go abroad

Almostwelsh · 29/11/2023 13:04

No. The weather is often rubbish and it's hugely overcrowded in holiday season

KnickerlessParsons · 29/11/2023 13:06

West Wales is much nicer, and cheaper.

TheBirdintheCave · 29/11/2023 13:07

We stayed in St Mawes in the first week of September and it was just utterly gorgeous. Amazing food. Amazing scenery. Tons of places to visit. The perfect UK seaside holiday. I would 100% go back.

Admittedly we managed the choose the best part of the summer (the week with the heatwave). Even the owners of the house we rented said it was the best weather they'd had for months.

WishIMite · 29/11/2023 13:08

If it’s sunny - yes
if it’s rainy - no

its a gamble basically

TeenagersAngst · 29/11/2023 13:09

It's so weather dependent. We've had two rubbish holidays in Cornwall due to bad weather. That's true of most of the UK but when you're spending thousands to brave the wind and rain, it's a bit shit.

ItsReallyOnlyMe · 29/11/2023 13:09

I always think Pembrokeshire is nicer than Cornwall and less crowded.

TeenagersAngst · 29/11/2023 13:09

Basically, if the weather is good, it can feel like you're abroad. If the weather is shit, it feels like you're at home.

idontlikealdi · 29/11/2023 13:09

If the weather is good yes but if not no. Plus it's horrifically busy in the summer holidays and the drive down there for us is a PITA.

sillnotseal · 29/11/2023 13:12

Absolutely not as your only holiday. I would not swap a week in Antigua.

i love Cornwall. But it’s a long weekend additional trip- sometimes we have been very lucky and it’s like being in the med, exploring beautiful beaches and being able to enjoy the ‘free’ stuff. But it’s pissing down in July and you’re just doing the same stuff as home in a different location, spending a fortune on pricey meals out for something to do. Parking is a nightmare so hard to nip around.

it’s worth going- absolutely but can be disappointing if you get the great British weather. Can you do a cheaper week in oct half term and a long weekend in Cornwall to try it?

if you are keen to make it your only holiday- I would do a group holiday with friends, big air bnb. That way if you end up with shite weather you can still create a bit of a festival vibe, kids can entertain themselves, games, cocktail making…

mewkins · 29/11/2023 13:12

If you don't usually holiday in the UK you may be disappointed. I love it though.

TheChosenTwo · 29/11/2023 13:14

St Ives isn’t really very nice imo. Overcrowded but 3 steps away from the main streets it appears completely poverty stricken with a raging drug problem.
I love Cornwall and don’t mind the rough parts but I wouldn’t go dressing up St Ives as upmarket.
We have had many a Cornish holiday and I especially love being by the sea when it’s grey and cloudy, better if it’s really raining - all the better for wrapping up and a walk to the pub! But it’s a very different holiday to Antigua so I guess you just need to decide which you’d prefer - sun and warmth and swimming in the sea or waterproofs, wet walks and huddling around a fire trying to warm up. Both have their charms! In feb I myself prefer winter sun.

ReviewingTheSituation · 29/11/2023 13:15

Cornwall is stunning in places, and well worth a visit... but not in February!

iamwhatiam23 · 29/11/2023 13:16

Nope! Very overcrowded in the summer! Rude locals ( probably all pissed off at the invasion) and lots of hooray henrys!

Crikeyalmighty · 29/11/2023 13:17

Personally I like Dorset as much without the distance- looks similar to me , st Ives is lovely but a fag to get too and none of these places to me are worth the cost 'if' you get shit weather.

We had 3 days in Christchurch and hit on the few days in that month that were pretty nice weather and I enjoyed it just as as much as trekking down to Cornwall- same goes for Broadstairs .

Toomuchleopard · 29/11/2023 13:28

We went to Cornwall in the summer in our caravan and cost £800 for the pitch = worth it
our friends paid £6000 for a cottage = not worth it

wited · 29/11/2023 13:30

Nope, it's one of the most overrated places in the UK

cheezncrackers · 29/11/2023 13:35

The problem with going in August is that the weather is often rubbish, the prices are at their peak and so are the crowds - so you potentially get a triple whammy of crapness. So knowing all that and that you might be in for a week of rain, if truly unlucky, would you still want to go? Personally, I'd rather have a week of guaranteed sunshine in the middle of winter, but it's your choice.

toomanykittensnow · 29/11/2023 13:36

I live in one of those places and can categorically say no. It is not worth the huge expense. Sure it's beautiful, but it's so expensive and it's still England. Bad weather and too many tourists. We went away in Sept, 5*all inclusive for similar price to what it would cost self catering here, without the food accounted for. It seriously baffles me that people choose Cornwall over going abroad.

BeeCucumber · 29/11/2023 13:37

No.

Movinghouseatlast · 29/11/2023 13:38

Cornwall.is beautiful, especially so in beautiful weather.

Have you looked at Fowey if you like upmarket? Stunning scenery, gorgeous restaurants and shops but also close to Polperro ( which is not quite as upmarket but has some fabulous food and is just the most beautiful fishing village)and Mevagissey. Looe is close too and has some top class restaurants to visit- Sardine Factory. Old Sail Loft, Fish Market.

margotmargeaux · 29/11/2023 13:52

Worth every penny. A stunning part of the country.

coxesorangepippin · 29/11/2023 13:53

Compared to Antigua?

Nope.

SquashPenguin · 29/11/2023 13:57

Not worth it. I used to live in Cornwall, February was miserable.

I would never trade a foreign holiday in a sunny climate for Cornwall.
