Regret spending money on a holiday

Booked a holiday and now regretting spending the money. Should have saved the money for a rainy day.

It’s not even that expensive of a trip as holidays go. It cost £900 each which means I’ll just have to be frugal for a few months. But it’s an expensive destination so will have to save a lot more before we go.

Anyone else get this feeling? After the booking excitement has gone and you see the card transactions!

You should have something to look forward too, not spend your life waiting for a rainy day.

Sometimes you need a treat Some people have several holidays a year

It’s done now, money gone so no regrets!

Try to look forward to it.

Yes. Spent an absolute fortune, took a year to pay off and we lived frugally all that time.

Was a great holiday.

But afterwards I felt sick about how much it cost us in the end. When I added it all up.. jeez.

Wouldn’t do that again.

Life is too short to not enjoy some of it.

I have this feeling often but I’m the type who worries about financial insecurity (comes from childhood ) plus health issues in the family.
My older sibling never feels regret about something like this, she is in “you live once” camp but she lives near our parents all her life and they were always helping her in difficult circumstances. DH and I don’t have any relatives in UK so no one to bail us out.

Hard to say without understanding your circumstances. Personally I have a financial plan that prioritises money as follows:
1 pay monthly bills inc annual stuff like insurances / Christmas etc
2 have 6 months savings in case income / health changes or house has an issue
3 pay enough into pension / investments for planned early retirement
4 spend fun money on things I want but don't really need, such as expensive holidays or new home furnishings

If 1-3 are sorted, then yeah I'd just book it and look forward to it!

But I work them in order of priority and don't move on to the next level until the current box is ticked.

But everyone is different and will prioritise as they see fit.
Plenty of people died rich without experiencing much life.
But also plenty of YOLOs walking around with memories and a ton of debt meaning they'll be working until they're old and tired.

There's no 'correct' answer.

I have an account where any leftovers of money go into. This month there will be nothing but last months we had a bit to put in. As a family we love travelling and we all get a lot from it so when we have enough we spend the pot!

Nope. Provided it isn't encroaching on any essential bills. I'd happily live on beans on toast to have a trip away. Never regret money spent on new adventures
