Where to go for a week with a 2 yr old early Feb?

Hit me with your inspiration!

Would you go all inclusive resort so you didn't have to cook/clean/etc and if so where? If we did a resort, I'd probably want one where we could do some day trips somewhere interesting.

Cruise?

Book a villa or AirBnb somewhere in Europe?

Budget is £2-3k. Preferably closer to £2k than 3k.

Gran Canaria? We went last Feb and really enjoyed it.

You don't have to go to an all-inclusive resort to avoid cooking and cleaning. I'd go half board so you can go out for lovely local lunches, otherwise you're missing such a big part of being in a different country.

What kind of temperature are you looking at? Are you wanting a beach holiday?

TwigTheWonderKid · 15/11/2023 21:01

Or somewhere snowy?

MyUsernameIsBetterThanYours · 15/11/2023 21:04

@TwigTheWonderKid Erm, either? That's not very helpful is it! I could see both being fun. Half board is a good point.

I suppose the critical point in all this is with a two year old. Going on holiday with a toddler is a whole new ball game. He's much less portable and far more opinionated now than he was at ten months (the last time we went on holiday) and ideally we'd like it to be fun for all of us!

Canaries are nice that time of year. We went then with a 9 month old then again with a 3 and 1.5 year old. Nice weather, pool, beaches etc. Plenty of kid friendly places to eat.

We had an amazing holiday in Italy when DS was that age, we used to manage long boozy lunches whilst he napped but February is not the time for that!

I was going to suggest Lanzarote if you want a bit of sunshine. This is a great hotel for adults and little ones and is right next to a small, safe sandy beach plus has a lovely long path along the coast which is great for little walkers (or you could take a scooter), shops close by to pootle about in and fabulous tapas. You can do boat trips, visit a volcano, ride a camel and visit a small zoo with water park.

There's no time difference and the transfer from the airport is very short.

Otherwise you could try somewhere like Finland where you can see reindeer, ride in a husky sledge, toboggan, try out skiing etc. But it is very cold...

If you want some sun then it has be be the Canaries in Feb. Mainland Europe can be very mixed weather.

I’d probably go somewhere like centre parcs or a nice holiday cottage/ lodge in the UK so you can chill out and not have to share a hotel room, but where there are plenty of activities to Lee dc occupied.

My experience of going on holiday with a two year old is that you just get to do childcare in a different place 24/7. I don't want to rain on your parade, but we found it exhausting travelling on a plane etc with ours.

Would hiring a motorhome work? I've not done it with a two year old, but I imagine travelling with one in a motorhome will give you the options to stop when you want, go to the loo, snack, etc. I doubt it would be worth travelling somewhere warm for a week in Feb so touring the UK might be too cold.

I'm going to go as far to say, doing nice things close to home might be a more enjoyable way to spend 2k... especially if you can get some childcare so you and your other half can get some rest/relaxation etc.

Just my thoughts anyway. I hope some other people have good ideas as I'd be interested in the answers too.

Tenerife or other canary island. Suggest b&b or self catering as eating out is reasonable.

Will be warm and light. Heaven.

minipie · 15/11/2023 23:07

Tenerife, Hotel Suites Villa Maria or Baobab Suites. Or Roca Nivaria - bit too big hotelly for me but has a kids club that takes 2 yr olds.

reluctantbrit · 16/11/2023 07:55

I would go for snow and look for a hotel with a suite.

It's peak time though for skiing, that may increase tha prices.

The Kinderhotel group do hotels who also offer all equipment you need, have activities but I am not sure what they offer outside normal school holidays.

MyUsernameIsBetterThanYours · 16/11/2023 09:00

@reluctantbrit ooh the kinderhotels look lush. I don’t ski but my partner does. A bit spendy but not impossible!

We took our toddler to H10 Suites Lanzarote Gardens in early Feb and had a fabulous week! We had a one bed apartment so toddler could sleep in a separate room to us in the evenings. It was perfect for young children. They have a free crèche, heated pool, play area, children's buffet with toddler plates and cutlery, highchairs already at the tables, staff so friendly and engaging with the children, short stroll to beach and lots of restaurants. We went half board but I think they do all inclusive too. Temperatures were in the mid 20s, plenty warm enough for us. We hired a car one day to do some sightseeing and on another we hired bikes and a trailer and cycled along the coast path. Booked with Jet2 and it was around £2000 for the week (I think TUI also go there).
