I thought it looked stunning and had some lovely outdoors to explore.

if you’ve been, did you like it and what would you recommend - is it worth going to more than one island? Thinking of 5-6 days

When we went end March we were swimming in the hot spring pools in hotel in Furnas which were 37C, you could possibly swim in the outside hot springs then in Furnas as well but not in sea. The is outdoor hotel pool which was at 37C and indoor ones were bigger version with lots of spa things. Dolphins etc in theory May to Oct but I don't know how choppy water would be. I have done it in UK (and Australia) in calm water and even there would say best to be a strong swimmer (Lundy and its seals) though you do get life vests /wetsuits etc.

One of the foods that stood out for me while there were the potatoes - plain, boiled potatoes.
An odd thing, but they were salty, firm and waxy and absolutely delicious.

I loved the bread, all the food at our hotel was amazing. Best food we have had at any hotel or close to it.

I love Portugal and portguese food. Yum!

I checked out direct flights (some of the flights that are indirect take HOURS, I mean ridiculous amount of hours). It works out about £500 London to Sao M direct/return, pp, which I think is quite a lot of cash tbh

Our flights were with Ryanair from Stansted and really cheap, maybe £100 per person return direct on way out and via Porto on way back but was end March.

Yes, nothing is cheap in half term

There's a Rynair but it's from an airport not near us and the return stopovers in Porto are very long

Yes I think that half term is crazy prices for most places. Porto is very nice for a stop over though quite different and city like. We stayed overnight as worried about relying on Ryanair though all flights were fine. Think can also change in Lisbon. But it is tricky as flights direct are just on Mondays from Stansted.
