Things to do in London

My Dh and I are going to London for my birthday. We're going from the 21st April until the 24th.

We're going to do the obvious and go to Harrods and Harvey Nichols. Also we're doing piccadilly circus and the shops around Oxford Street. We're choosing between London Zoo or the Natural History Museum.

Just wondering if anyone knew of anywhere good to go that isnt really in the guidebooks?

Also any restaurants would be great?

Thanks

Morning Dizzy.

We are probably going to do London Eye, I've been on it before but dh hasn't.

I wanted to go to a food market so we'll have to borough food market.

are you going with kids?

OverMyDeadBody · 11/03/2008 10:33

How about the ice bar one evening?

dizzydixies · 11/03/2008 10:35

I love the london eye, have been on only during day but apparently its lovely at night too.

if its nice a walk through hyde park to nottinghill?

kings road for all the shops
kensington for all the shops to look at in awe at!!

dizzydixies · 11/03/2008 10:36

oh and we went to the comedy club just of leicester square one night - it was fabulous!!

here

redadmiral · 11/03/2008 10:38

Not Madame Tussauds! Massive queues and I don't think it's that great... Others may differ...

I like the Tate Modern - it's huge and not too precious, though obviously still a gallery so some parental control required!

dizzydixies · 11/03/2008 10:42

girls they are going child free so its all the grown up suggestions they're needing!

kayzi just looked and on the wed 23rd the comedy store have the comedy store players on and that was the one we went to see, do you remember the show 'who's line is it anyway?' well its just like that, absolutely hysterical. all seated AND has a bar and not too expensive at £15 either

well worth it, promise!!

kayzisbroody · 11/03/2008 10:49

I love 'whose line is it anyway?' and the 23rd is my birthday so I might have to look into that.

I really want to go to the ice bar as it looks so cool.

the players night is also the night when they have the more 'well known' comedians - I knew a couple of them from the tv the night when we went and all of us were crying from laughing

its really easy to get to and loads of bars and restaurants round about there too

taipo · 11/03/2008 10:53

Definitely not Madame Tussauds.
Kew Gardens is fab with or without dc, but perhaps a bit far out.
Greenwich is nice and could be combined with a boat trip on the Thames.
Walk along Regent's Canal, especially Little Venice area.

kayzisbroody · 11/03/2008 10:57

I'd like to do a baot trip. I would quite like to go to the observatory(sp)
Dh is just saying "I don't mind" to everything so I dont know what he wants to do or see.

Natural History Musuem over the Zoo (and easier to get to). Spend time pottering through the City and through London parks, also the South Bank. Lots of good restaurants all over the place - would depend on where you were based and your budget.

If you;re going to Piccadilly Circus, take a detour along Jermyn Street and go to Floris and Paxton and Whitfields, then have a look in St James.

EffiePerine · 11/03/2008 11:00

Greenwich is lovely - you could get a boat down and then potter through the market and go to the Observatory (no market on a Monday).

redadmiral · 11/03/2008 11:01

Is it over a weekend? Has anyone said Notting Hill market?

AnnieAreYouOkAreYouOkAnnie · 11/03/2008 11:01

Carnaby St for shopping rather than Oxford St.

Beak St for a few cheap and cheerful bistros or cosy restaurants.

Avoid Oxford St. Way too packed.

AnnieAreYouOkAreYouOkAnnie · 11/03/2008 11:02

A walk along the shad thames is lovely too, for shops and lots of posh restaurants

kayzisbroody · 11/03/2008 11:03

The Museum is free too.
We went for a day a few years ago. We only really managed Oxford Circus and Whitehall. We want to get as much in as possible.

We are staying at a hotel at Wembley.
