We want to go to Denmark for about 10 days next August. Definitely want to go to billund for Lego house, legoland and WOW park and to Copenhagen but not sure which way round to do them.
we can fly into either or into one and out the other.
also wondering if we should add some time on to visit the coast.
all Denmark tips appreciated!

I have no direct experience with Legoland in Bilund, but my usual approach with these type of holidays is always city and culture first and theme park second, and that usually means we can limit the complaining about museums and the sightseeing from the kids, because they still have the theme park, that had been planned for them, to look forward to. I have been to Copenhagen but it was pre-children and in winter. Tivoli gardens are nice and we took a day trip to Frederiksborg castle. The little mermaid was not very exciting, we also went to one of the breweries for a tour, but my overriding memory was that it was very very cold. August would be much better!

We did Copenhagen 3 nights, then Billund 3 nights and had an amazing time. Denmark is fabulous!

Spareincoming · 01/11/2023 21:03

Copenhagen first, then Billund.
I throughly recommend the Copenhagen card for seeing as much of the city as you can.

MsAnnFrope · 01/11/2023 21:58

i think apartment/holiday home Copenhagen then hotel billund if anyone has any recommendations?

Going to Billund second might work better if that means the Danish schools are back by then?

caketherapy · 02/11/2023 16:19

I don't know on order but Copenhagen w/ds was so much fun! He wants to go back(!) I'd recommend Tivolli funfair and the aquarium too.

myrtleWilson · 02/11/2023 16:46

There's a woman on insta (her handle is annieineventyrland) who is American and has moved with her family to Denmark. She recently stayed in a very cute airbnb type place when they went to Kerterminde which is about 2hrs from Copenhagen. They also visited an amazing looking safari type park where you could rent a lodge in the park. She also does video tours of her neighbourhood or places to take the children so it may be worth a watch...

Havanananana · 02/11/2023 18:52

I'd probably do Copenhagen and then Billund. I assume you are doing this with children.

Denmark is surrounded by coastline! There are beaches near Copenhagen (you can even swim in the centre of Copenhagen - imagine doing that in the Thames 😬) and also on your way over to Billund. For example, if you spend time in Vejle and visit the Økolariet (which takes max. 2 hours) you could also spend time at the Bredballestrand beach which is on the north side of the fjord, near the big bridge. If you want to see the Jutland west coast then it's a good idea to head over towards Henne Strand, Vejers Strand or any of the beach areas between Esbjerg and Ringkøbing.

You could easily add a few days to your trip and look at some of the nice places in Southern Denmark - Ribe, Tønder, Sønderborg or Kolding (the last 2 both have castles) or head N.E. from Billund to Aarhus, Randers (see the Rainforest) or Ebeltoft and Djurs Sommerland amusement park, or Kattegatcenter aquarium at Grenaa. And then there's Silkeborg and the Lake District, where you'll also find the AQUA centre and Tollund Man in the museum ...

Definitely stay at Lalandia in billund! It’s fantastic lots if different restaurants and cafes an amazing water park, across the road from Lego land it has a free bus to Lego house and wow park but it’s an easy walk to wow park! I’d do Billund first then Copenhagen!

TakeMe2Insanity · 02/11/2023 19:06

Agree with previous posters do the city first. It’ll keep them motivated! Also make sure you do tivoli. Then billund.

StillWantingADog · 02/11/2023 19:10

In billund I would highly recommend the water park at Lalandia. You can stay there (roughly center parc-ish) which means it’s included. Or buy day passes which is what we did. My 8 and 10 year olds loved it.

Jeevesnotwooster · 02/11/2023 19:21

We did this when kids were smaller. Brilliant holiday. We did Airbnb in Copenhagen, then Legoland staying in Julesminde on the coast and driving to Legoland. If you have more time/money I'd suggest staying at the resort and then going to the coast. We also did the Viking Museum at Roskilde. There are loads of places we didn't go to which I wish we had. You'll have a fab time

Jeevesnotwooster · 02/11/2023 19:25

@Havanananana I'd forgotten you can swim in the river in Copenhagen. We did that too!
We actually drove back to Copenhagen and spent our last night in the Marriott which has a view over the Oresund Bridge. (Also on my to do list next time as well as the aquarium)

stonkytonk11 · 02/11/2023 19:28

Price up flights and see which way round is cheaper?

Billund is great - def recommend staying at Lalandia, it's across the road from Legoland and so much to do there. Don't miss Lego House too

MsAnnFrope · 02/11/2023 19:42

Thanks for all the information @Havanananana would you recommended hiring a car?
I was thinking fly in to Copenhagen the train to billund and fly home.

Oooh do many suggestions! We are planning 10 days but not sure how to divide the time.

StillWantingADog · 02/11/2023 20:18

sounds great. You want 4ish days in Billund. There is obviously great stuff there but the actual town and area are quite dull. Very little actually going on outside the hotels and Lalandia.

stonkytonk11 · 02/11/2023 20:39

No train to Billund, you'd need to get train to Vejle then bus from there I'd think

Bananalanacake · 02/11/2023 20:59

I really enjoyed the Teddy bear art museum which is next to the Lego house, has a cafe and a nice garden.

parietal · 02/11/2023 21:07

In Copenhagen, make sure you take a day to visit Experimentrium. It is a giant interactive science museum (all in English) and my kids still find new fun things every time we visit.

Havanananana · 02/11/2023 22:41

If you want to get around Jutland to the places suggested ^^ then a car is necessary. Billund does not have a train station and the connections to the rest of Jutland, although reliable, are not very frequent.

Hiring a car will either involve pricing up the cost of a one-way hire if you rent in Copenhagen and drop off in Billund or alternatively you could take the train + bus from Copenhagen to Billund (via Vejle) and then hire a car for 4-5 days from the airport at Billund and fly home from there. Billund itself is all things Lego, plus Lalandia, the teddy bears and WOW Park, but the village itself is really quiet with not much going on - and there is really lots to see within a 60-90 minute drive.

From my list in the earlier post I missed out the Viking stuff at Jelling, which is not far from Billund - and you should definitely visit the Viking ships in Roskilde when you are in Copenhagen, and as suggested by pp the Experimentarium too.

littlemisslozza · 02/11/2023 22:48

We did a trip like this in 2019 with our 3 DC. Started in Copenhagen, went to Tivoli Gardens and on the train to Malmo (Sweden) for a day. 3 nights in Copenhagen were great. We then hired a car and drove to Billund, where we stayed at Lalandia. Their water park was fun. Had 3 nights there. One day at Legoland, which was much less crowded than Windsor, although it was August and the Danish schools had gone back. Another day at Lego House, which was actually better than Legoland, a real highlight.

Havanananana · 02/11/2023 22:51

You don't really need a car to get around Billund itself - you can walk from one end to the other in 40 minutes and all of the attractions are close to each other. In the summer there is also a shuttle bus between the airport, the hotels and the attractions. So if you're only sightseeing in Jutland for 2-3 days, then just hire a car from the airport for those days. All the major rental companies have cars at Billund Airport - look at a consolidator site such as autoeurope for the best deals. The roads around Jutland are really quiet.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 03/11/2023 00:02

In Copenhagen, we stayed very centrally at Hotel Ansgar. Clean and tidy, simple rooms, good breakfast. Very handy for tye railway station and Tivoli Gardens.

Exhaustedpenguin · 03/11/2023 00:58

I'd echo those who have said Copenhagen first then Bilund. We did this last summer (started in Bornholm, ferry and train to Copenhagen, then train and bus to Bilund.) The Danish schools had gone back by then and Legoland was so quiet that on some rides the kids finished and just stayed on the ride and went back again.
And definitely do the harbour swimming in Copenhagen. My DC's 11 and 9 did this and loved the giant diving boards. Also have a day cycling and just exploring the parks. Enjoy planning your holiday!
