Holiday with one very sociable tween

DD10 is really past the point of spending all her time with DH and I on holiday but is too old now for holiday clubs.
she very much likes meeting other children on holiday and having a certain amount of freedom to roam with them.
we’ve done winter sun in Cyprus and Canary Islands but DH would like a not too hot holiday.
am I asking for the moon on a stick here? Or can anyone suggest a holiday which could work for us all?

Cruising worked well for us with our teen DS. He ate meals with us and spent interesting times in port with us but the rest of the time he hung out with other children on the ship and had a ball.

That would have been a good shout but DH has no sea legs at all!

Bring a friend for him? We’ve done that once or twice if we weren’t holidaying with friends with children — it worked well for us if staying fairly close to home, though a friend with a rather fickle 12/13 year old daughter invited her current best friend to come to the US with them in the summer (friend is American, they had a family cabin by a lake in Maine), but the friendship had fizzled out long before the summer holidays started, and there was a deeply awkward conversation to be had with the other child’s parents….

Are you looking at winter or summer? If it's summer, you really can't beat a French campsite. They just roam in packs, and basically have the run of the place.

We did a few Neilson holidays with our two when they were tweens. Lots of activities to choose from for all the family.

greeeeentreeeeee · 24/10/2023 19:12

Neilson for sure

MsAnnFrope · 24/10/2023 19:18

I think she likes the novelty of new friends. Also, selfishly, I don’t want to look after 2 of them!
neilsen or French campsite sounds good.

French campsite!! I absolutely loved our holidays aged 8-13 made some excellent friends - even carried on seeing one girl for a few months afterwards even though I am Midlands and she was in Scotland!!

Dressinginmygown · 24/10/2023 21:28

Cruising has worked brilliantly for us too. Older teen had an amazing time, out socialising with new friends and tween made some lovely friends too and we still keep in touch now.

massistar · 25/10/2023 12:12

Neilsen or Mark Warner would be a good option.

HappiDaze · 25/10/2023 12:13

Mark Warner or Neilson for sure

Agree with French campsite. Look for one that offers a holiday club to give your tween a better chance of meeting other kids. A lot will offer chalets or huts as an alternative to tents if you're not that into camping.

MsAnnFrope · 25/10/2023 14:19

I loved French campsites as a kid - and also an only one. I was much shyer than DD but still made friends.

Any UK suggestions? DH isn’t keen on it being too warm although my experience of France is that it will be fine!

PGL do residential activities holidays for families as well as kids, which might be good (although my idea of hell)
We also like eurocamp, as there tend to be lots of families and safe environment for them to go roaming, with distractions like games rooms and pool,.as well as back up kids clubs for all age groups (often not too naff for older kids too)

YaWeeFurryBastard · 25/10/2023 17:58

Sorry but I hated French campsites at that age! I’d also suggest a cruise, your daughter would have an absolute blast, especially on one of the royal Caribbean ships.

MsAnnFrope · 25/10/2023 18:59

DH really hates the idea of a cruise and DD not mad keen on boats or it would be the obvious choice!
