Self organised Thailand holiday - me & 3 kids

Ohladedah · 21/10/2023 13:07

I'm planning on spending 5 weeks with my 3 kids 7 9 + 12 in Thailand and/or Vietnam or maybe Cambodia or Malaysia.

I'd like to do a family tour in the first half, something where my kids have others to entertain them. Definitely not beachy tours, as we'll do that ourselves in the second half. The kids would especially love wildlife and adventure (age appropriate).

The tour companies I've looked at all include time at beach resorts, which I don't want.

Does anyone have suggestions? I'd be happy to piece together small tours or find one longer one.

Places like Elephant Hills are pretty easy to combine with other trips. They can pick you up from 1 side of Thailand - for example Phuket - and drop you off the other side - eg Koh Samui

Backpacked around SEA after uni and have been back with DP every year (not withstanding covid) every year since. It's super easy to self organise, both flights within and between countries but also trains, coaches and boats. What do you mean by a family tour?

It is easy to do it yourself by doing some research on Travelfish site to pick ones that appeal to you.

Head to Chiang Mai.From there you can head to Chiang Dao, Pai and Chiang Rai. You could take a day trip to observe elephants at Chiang Mai elephant sanctuary.
Take the train from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi.Good Times resort on the river is meant to be good for kids.Ride the train to Hellfire Pass.Lots of WW2 history in the area.
Elephant Hills is pricey.

Thanks all. Appreciate it.

I've not heard of Travelfish before, now I'm deep into it!

It’s very easy to travel round Thailand, do the overnight train from Bangkok to Chiangmai and visit the Elephant Nature park, they rescue elephants from riding & logging and you can stay on site & feed them etc it’s fab :)

Chiangmai is great for outdoor activities- trekking into the hills, white water rafting, and has a great night market too.

We just come back from 3 weeks in Thailand with DH and 2 teens, 13 and 15.
I booked everything separately, flights, internal flights, car transfers, accommodation and tours.
Bangkok to Chiang Mai to Koh Samui and then back to BKK for 3 nights before flying home.
We used Khanom Travel for 2 day tours, one a packed day visiting temples, markets, using all the transport systems etc. A tuk tuk night Street food tour.

In Chang Mai we used the sister company for a day of elephants, waterfalls, and a couple of stunning temples. Loved Chiang Mai!

Has anyone found any reasonable flights? I've been looking for Easter and they're coming out about £1k pp. Also not direct...

For comparison, we went to Vietnam a couple years back for half that.

gotomomo · 23/10/2023 18:56

@Stokey

Flights have got very expensive, Sri Lanka has doubled for the indirect flights

Stokey · 23/10/2023 19:51

Yes @gotomomo Sri Lanka was the other place I was thinking of and flights are extortionate. Also no-one seems to fly direct any more.

House4DS · 23/10/2023 19:57

Ouch!
Are you restricted to school holidays only?
Pre COVID Sri Lanka was £750 per person indirect in summer hols, so not that much more now.
Costs there are very low (lower than Thailand).
I'm going to look in January at booking Thailand for July/August.

Stokey · 24/10/2023 15:08

Sadly we're bound by school holidays. May look at August though. Is that monsoon or is it over by then? I tend to avoid Asia in summer.

Twilightstarbright · 24/10/2023 15:33

I love phants is an excellent elephant and wildlife place to stay. Elephant Hills is well out of budget for me.

House4DS · 24/10/2023 16:26

@Stokey we've had excellent UK summer holidays in Sri Lanka and Borneo.
Sri Lanka had 2 rainy seasons - our summer is good for the east coast, our winter is good for south coast. Habarana-Nilaveli-Arugum Bay-Ella-Kandy made a fantastic August holiday. Occasional night time storms.
Borneo likewise.
A colleague and friend went to Thailand in August - like Sri Lanka you need to pick your coast to avoid the rains.

Big fan of independent SE Asia travel here. First took the children on trips of 4+ weeks when the youngest was six. Last trip was when the eldest was 14. It is dead simple to piece a trip together yourself. Book flights and hotels on the internet. Lots of coach/train/minibus connections to get you between towns and cities. Use local tour operators to get about on trips to sights.

My two loved halong bay, as they loved the islands and kayaking.

They enjoyed the puppet shows in ho chi Minh, and the big water park there.

Chaing Rai's White Temple is rather quirky. That's about the only thing I can remember them enjoying in Thailand. They were non plussed about our Bangkok/Phuket times

They also loved our overnight boat trip down the Mekong from Thailand into Laos. They woke up with elephants bathing outside their window.

We had lots of fun in Vang Vieng, high ropes, mud treks and the like.

Gibbon experience...just wow!

Swimming in the Kuang Si waterfalls were lovely.

Night markets in PP and Luang Prabang were good fun. Son loved Dine in the Dark. Daughter hated it. Daughter did love having a spa morning in PP. As they were old enough during our last trip, I took them to the Killing Fields & S21. I'm glad they understood the journey Cambodia had been on.

Stationery shopping in PBC is a definite with children your age. It was a staple every time we went.

Bamboo train in Battambang is a must. As is Phare. They could take or leave Angkor Wat. They were more receptive the second time we went, as they were a few years older then.

For beach time at the end, Koh Rong every time! Watch the first series of Race across the world to see one of the many great resorts available.

Personally I'd only go to two countries from the four you've suggested. Otherwise you'll be spread too thin and travelling more than enjoying. Malaysia has a very different feel to the other 3. Whichever two you choose, make sure Cambodia is one of them!

Stokey · 25/10/2023 07:54

Thanks @House4DS . I've haven't been to Sri Lanka since before the war ended so always forget that you can visit the northeast.

Apologies for the hijack @Ohladedah your trip sounds amazing. We did Vietnam with my then 9 and 11 year old and they absolutely loved it. Highly recommend a motor bike trip from Hue to Hoi An, that was their highlight.
