Venice help

Can anyone recommend a hotel to me please?

I’ve found cheap flights so planning on 3 nights. Thing is the flight doesn’t arrive until 10 at night so I’d like to make transfer as easy as possible. Basically, taxi from door to door. I don’t want to find myself having to get a boat or somehow swap transport or walk. I’ve never been before. Don’t know the layout etc so I’d really appreciate your help if you’ve been before and can suggest a hotel. If it’s got breakfast, even better. Thanks.

You won't be able to get a taxi door to door unless you mean a water taxi? This is doable though quite expensive.

@Smurfmurf Unless you're staying on the mainland (Mestre for example) and plan on travelling into Venice every day then you will have to change transport as Venice isn't accessible by car.

If you want to stay in Venice itself my best tip would be to choose a hotel near the airport water bus stop. The hotel we use (Hotel Vecellio) is only a few metres from the stop so it's basically a case of getting off the plane, walking to the water bus, sailing over to Venice island and walking over the bridge to the hotel. It's a fairly basic accommodation but it has a good breakfast, is near some nice restaurants, has a lovely view (if you get a lagoon room) and is in a quiet area.

You can get a bus (so presumably a taxi too) to Piazza Roma in Venice. This is close to the train station. We stayed in a hotel close to the station a couple of weeks ago, NH Venezia Santa Lucia, when we got the train to Venice. It would fit your requirements. You would have a short walk from Piazza Roma. I don’t think you would want a hotel near the road, it isn’t the nicest bit of Venice. Everywhere in Venice is likely to involve a walk, unless you have a hotel that a water taxi can take you directly to (£££).

Which airport are you arriving at? The Ryanair one is a fair distance away for example.

Silkiefloof · 18/10/2023 09:28

Actually Ryanair appears to fly to both Venice airports now but what is the name of the airport? Venice itself is canals and small pedestrian streets so most of it would not be viable by taxi other than a water taxi. But it's very safe.

Thank you. We arrive at Marco Polo with EasyJet. Will have a look at hotels at lunch time and travel options.

@Smurfmurf Ah good, that's much easier to access Venice from than Treviso.

Indiana2021 · 18/10/2023 10:18

If you're considering staying on the mainland have a look at the Antony Hotel in Campalto. 10 mins in a bus or 5 mins in a taxi from Marco Polo along a main bus route gets you to the hotel.
For visiting Venice itself, it's about 15 mins by bus from the hotel into Venice if you don't mind being a bit further out and going in and out by public transport each day. Buses are really easy to use with cheap fares.

Sgtmajormummy · 18/10/2023 10:29

Buses are still running at that time. The airport is pretty close to the city so I wouldn’t bother with a taxi, especially as you’re probably travelling light.
Sorry, I can’t help with hotels but Booking.com is widely used as a selling site by Italian hospitality.

The airport bus arrives in Piazzale Roma which means you’d go over the causeway road and see the lights of Venice. A lovely way to get your first view. Plus you see it spread below as you land.

TheBirdintheCave · 18/10/2023 10:42

@Sgtmajormummy Oh stopppp now I miss Venice so badly 😂

Chemenger · 18/10/2023 10:56

One tip - pack light unless you do find a door to door solution. You will be carrying your bags up and down stepped bridges. And take comfortable shoes, you will walk miles.

Smurfmurf · 18/10/2023 12:34

Thanks all for your help. I think I’ll try and base ourselves near Piazalle Roma for ease. Happy for walking but this seems a bit easier with the late ETA on our first night.

OP where did you end up in the end? Trying to plan my trip!

Smurfmurf · 11/04/2024 07:44

We stayed at the Hotel Olimpia over a couple of bridges next to Piazalle Roma. You can actually see the hotel from where you get off the airport bus. We opted for this hotel as it has good reviews and we didn’t want to navigate the streets at midnight on arrival. We chose well as we were an hour late so it was good to find the hotel easily at 1 am. I’d stay again if we visited Venice again.

We had a great couple of days. Weather on day 1 was glorious so we were able to sit outside and eat, have a Prosecco and chiccheti. Day 2 was freezing and it started to rain heavily early evening. We saw everything we wanted to.
