I have two dc (4&6), due to go to a European city for a week from Sunday.

I've been ill recently. 4yo DS on day three of a bug (tired, sick, temp). I suspect COVID.

I'm worried he'll be ill while away, or that dd and DH will have it.

How do you approach this with travel insurer? Tell them now? How do you get a doctor's note?

Today is the last day I can cancel accommodation.

You say you suspect covid, have you tested him? Does your insurance have covid cover?
Sunday is 5 days away so he could be right as rain by then.

Do you mean you want to claim on insurance for cancelling?
Travel insurance will usually only cover you if your DS is declared medically unfit to travel by a doctor so you'd need to wait until nearer the time to see how he recovers. You'd need a medical certificate to state he couldn't travel

It's Wwdneaday morning. You leave in 4 days.
There isnow way - currently - to predict if you will be well enough to travel.
IF you are unfit to travel, you will need a doctor's note to state that. But I wouldn't contact the insurance until Saturday.

OK thanks. If he's ill on Sunday though, how do I get a doctor's certificate then? Also he's much sicker at night, that's hard to show to a doctor.

Presumably you're allowed to claim on insurance if a child has eg a brief vomiting bout and is not able to fly, but it's not exactly a grave illness?

I'm worried insurance will say we haven't tried to limit our loss by cancelling accommodation while there was time and foreseeable we wouldn't be able to make it.

DS has previously been critically ill following a similar scenario, so I'm very anxious and very tired from being up with him - makes it harder to make decisions.

I haven't tested for covid, I need to get tests and I've been spending all week either with DS or trying frantically to get some work done.

And it also seems highly likely DH and DD will get whatever bug it is - I'm afraid of being abroad with a sick family and unable to get back, plus we're supposed to stay with friends for a few nights and don't want to either make them ill or have to pay £££ for a hotel just to be sick in it

If you are thinking of cancelling, ring GP now to get GP letter, I doubt they would want to see DS, but it will probably take a few days, then ring Insurance Company today to let them know and ask if you should cancel accommodation.

Speak to your insurance policy and ask. If DH and DD haven’t yet got it they may not advise to cancel yet, or they may not be sick enough for the insurers to pay. You’d need sick notes for everyone probably.

Doctors gave me the run around, sent me to a pharmacist saying they could test for covid and give a sick note, they contradicted both of these things!

I do have covid cover. When you claim for that, is a lateral flow test result enough? Do you literally just need to send a photo of it?

Really don't like the idea of having to find a weekend out of hours service and drag sick child there at night just to tick a box on the insurance form.

I would doubt it but you'll need to check the wording of your policy. Mine says covid 19 certified by a medical practitioner, same as all other conditions.
So you'll probably need to book at one of those private testing places for travellers. I know they have them at airports and some pharmacies. But they're not cheap so make sure you've done a lateral flow 1st so know it's definitely covid, and then I'd also phone your insurer to check exactly what medical certificates they want
