Advice on a short trip to Morocco from Spain?

We're going to the Alicante/Murcia region in Spain for 15 days, but have four days over the weekend of 28th-31st March 2008 where we haven't yet booked accommodation.

We're two adults and two teenage girls.

I like the idea of going to Morocco by ferry - I can see that Almeria is only about a three hour drive from Alicante.

We'd then be able to cross to Melilla or Nador.

Any thoughts on this? We'd need to check with the hire company about taking the car to Morocco, otherwise we'd go as foot passengers.

If Morocco isn't advisable, any other thoughts of where we could go before returning to the village of La Canalosa in Spain?

I've phoned the GP clinic to arrange innoculations in case we do decide to go...it would be quite an adventure I think.

Many thanks

never been jane, but dh and friends have.

wonderful country, loads of begging children and bent cops. easy journey over (unless weather bad)...that's what I've heard.

hopefully someone else will come up with some more info for you! Good luck definately go, though take care of your dd's especially if they have blue eyes.

sorry jane, just re-read, and hope my message doesn't read wrong.

It really IS a wonderful country but it is different to Europe. As you say, it would be an adventure, and probably a great eye-opener for your teens!

Let us know ho you get on.

Thanks. DDs do have blue eyes - I've been to Marrakesh before and loved it.

I posted on another forum, where someone suggested going to Granada instead - think we might do that as we'll get our fill of Moorish architecture etc without the hazards of Morocco (I had the runs when I went there, plus the rest of the family would need jabs)

Does anyone have any Granada hints and tips? Especially for two teenagers who won't be as thrilled by the architecture and culture as I will be?

Alhambra Palace is a must, absolute must.

there's a website somewhere and it's a real good idea to book your tickets in advance. Last time we were there, at 10 in the morning they were only selling tickets for 4pm. They have a limited intake I think.

Why not drive up to the Sierra Nevada too? The ski resort will still be open and, even if you don't ski you can park and have lunch in Pradollano (the village) on the main square facing the slopes.
