Help with part time holiday entitlement

ChocolateBiscuit2 · 10/10/2023 11:01

Hoping someone can help as I’ve confused myself!
I’ll be returning to work 3 days a week Mon-Wed (full time hours are 37.5 so my part time hours will be 22.5).

I’ve used the gov.uk calculator and it’s saying I will get 17 days including bank holidays. Excluding Good Friday as I won’t be working that, does this mean I only get 10 days to play with (after the 7 bank holidays?).

Many thanks!

how much holiday do full timers get?

ChocolateBiscuit2 · 10/10/2023 11:10

They get 21 days + 8 bank holidays so 29 days in total, sorry should have included that!

You need to know what the f/t a/l allocation is for someone with your length of service (if that’s a feature of the leave in your organisation) and then you can work from there.

Are you working the leave out for the whole year or part way through?

Comefromaway · 10/10/2023 11:13

Your entitlement is actually 17.4 days including bank holidays and they are not allowed to round down so you will either get an extra half day holiday or if you are lucky they might round it up to 18 days.

Part timers who work on Mondays often find that the fact that most bank holidays fall on a Monday means they get less choice of free days unfortunately.

AgentProvocateur · 10/10/2023 11:15

Yes. You’re working 60% of the year, so you get 60% of the annual leave. Some companies will let you work another day instead of the Monday so that you’re not using so much annual leave.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 10/10/2023 11:16

Also, I might be stating the obvious here, but don't forget that it 'costs' you fewer days than a full-timer to have a week off, as you don't need to 'pay' for the Thursday or Friday.

confusedlots · 10/10/2023 11:19

Yea that sounds right, and is one of the reasons many part timers don't work Mondays. You'll end up using a lot of your leave allowance for bank holidays, instead of having the flexibility to take those days off when you want.

sunsetsurfer · 10/10/2023 11:19

I get about 40 days! I work inbetween part time and full time, in hospitality so we don’t get bank holidays but do get an extra day and half for these (even though I don’t work Mondays I still get these added).

Talipesmum · 10/10/2023 11:19

You get 17.4 days leave. You need to use a days leave to take the bank holidays off, if you have to in your org (in mine you can work them if you like and take the time elsewhere). You use the same pot of leave to take your holidays.

Because Monday is one of your work days, you’ll have to use your 17.4 days leave allowance to take all those Mondays off so it’s likely to disadvantage you in using your leave dates for normal holidays. Any chance you can shift working days, or work some bank holidays?

MrsRachelDanvers · 10/10/2023 11:21

Good Friday will be pro rata. When a BH falls on one of your working day, it will come out of your total entitlement-your BHs will be added pro rata to your annual leave. With GF, it will be allowed for in your entitlement-but only 3/5 of it iyswim. The trouble with working Mondays as a part timer, you’ll get less choice when to take holidays as each full BH Monday will come out of your entitlement. It’s not a problem if you would want them off anyway as I always did but it does appear to give the impression you get less even though you don’t.

SirChenjins · 10/10/2023 11:22

Sometimes it’s easier to take your leave in hours - so add your public holidays and annual leave allowances together and then just deduct the PH and A/L from the total as you go along.

ChocolateBiscuit2 · 10/10/2023 11:22

Thank you everyone for your replies. Unfortunately I don’t have a choice regarding Mondays as it’s our busiest day of the week, I’ll just have to plan my holidays strategically!

17.4 days as a previous poster said, but they cannot round down, so 17.5 days as a minimum. But you will lose a few of them to bank holiday Mondays unless you can work the Friday on weeks where there is a bank holiday.

Talipesmum · 10/10/2023 11:25

But it’s not that bad - 6 of the bank holidays over the next year are Mondays. And 4.8 (about 5) days of your 17.4 days are “bank holiday” pro rated leave. So you have to use one of your 12.6 normal leave days to cover the additional Monday bank holiday.

And remember it only takes 3 days of your leave to have a full week off.

DilemmaDelilah · 10/10/2023 11:45

@Talipesmum I'm not sure you have your calculations right regarding the bank holidays. If @ChocolateBiscuit2 works a full day on a Monday, and she does, then she will need to take the full day as leave.
Even if her leave was calculated in hours, she would still have to take the full number of hours she would normally have worked on that day.

I spent quite a few years calculating annual leave entitlements for NHS staff and used to get a huge number of people complaining that they had to take 7.5 hours of annual leave for a bank holiday, as that was their usual number of working hours on that day, but their pro rata'd bank holiday leave was only 6 hours for staff working 30 hours per week (and obviously less for people working fewer hours) so they didn't see why they had to take more leave than they were being given. Trust me ... It IS fair!
