Would you mention in the review that money/ jewellery was stolen from the room?

We are recently back from holiday. We has such an amazing time. But we had some money and a few pieces of jewellery stolen. The whole lot comes to about €200. DH had his wallet on the counter in our room, and I had a small jewellery box.

I tried to go to reception a few times but they were always busy, took over an hour of queuing the day we checked in. Also we couldn't be 100% sure we hadn't left the cash/ jewellery at home. So we got on with our holiday and forgot about it.

When we arrived home I emailed them, they said I should have told them when there and that without a police report there is nothing they/ insurance can do. OK fine my mistake.

But we really enjoyed the holiday honestly one of the best I have been on and I don't know if I should warn people maybe leave things a little hidden. Our sons tablet and my kindle weren't touched just the things that were very easy to get.

Didn't the hotel provide a safe in the room? If not, fair to mention its absence. If yes, you only have yourself to blame for negligence.

Sorry but I agree - it is rare that there isn't either a safe or a safety depoist box. Money was stolen from a few guests in a hotel that I stayed at earlier in the year. They left it "hidden" in their rooms because they couldn't be bothered to walk to reception to put it is the safe deposit box. It's no excuse for theft, but it is an invitation for it.

@GrumpyPanda @BlueYonder57 it was a holiday village sort of place with lodges. No safe deposit box - we do normally use it for passports/ car keys etc.
Though even if there was I don't think anyone should take our things. I must have been someone with a key also.

I feel like it is one of those live and learn experiences. The jewellery thankfully was neither expensive or sentimental. I had left my wedding rings at home, if I had brought them I wouldn't have worn to the pool so they might have been gone now too! It was just costume jewellery to go with a few outfits I had brought.

I would mention it if the hotel didn’t inform you of a safe place to store valuables. I must admit I would never take jewellery on holiday unless I was wearing it.

pontipinemum · 03/10/2023 14:33

@siegfriedchild the jewellery thankfully was really cheap from the likes of primark etc, well apart from a reasonable pair of earrings. It was a mix of city break/ pool holiday so I knew I wouldn't wear the jewellery when swimming, That's why I didn't bring my wedding rings, so glad I didn't now!

Hm. That’s not nice to have stuff taken. I would maybe mention it.

For future, I’d think wedding/engagement ring would be safe on your fingers while swimming? Not that it matters in this case.

ChaToilLeam · 03/10/2023 14:36

Yes, I would.

But YWBU not to report it.

Uncooperativefingers · 03/10/2023 14:40

I don't under why you wouldn't mention it!

Take yourself back to before your holiday, surely you would appreciate the heads up that you can't leave things in your room without threat of them being stolen? Help the next person who is currently wondering whether to take their rings or loads of spare case to prevent then having to use an atm while there.

Also, the hotel's response is shit and not good enough.

IWasFunBeforeMum · 03/10/2023 14:42

If you're not 100% certain you even took it on holiday then you're definitely being unreasonable!!

Millybob · 03/10/2023 14:45

I'd mention an hour queue at reception!
