Holiday budget

Just wondered how much people spend on average for main summer holiday. Not been abroad for a few years but for a family of 4 it’s looking way more expensive than I remember!

A lot, but that’s totally irrelevant (and frankly, who gives a crap about a random). What can you afford? What can you not spend on to redirect to holiday funds.

Rocknrollstar · 01/10/2023 21:24

Draw up your budget and stick to it. If you can, go all inclusive as you won’t then have to worry about the cost of drinks, ice creams, clubs.

TheDuchessOfMN · 01/10/2023 22:06

Are you booking a package with a tour operator, or booking flights and accommodation yourself?

Eurocamp type holidays aren’t very expensive

Quitelikeit · 01/10/2023 22:12

maybe 2k? Go to Majorca - hotel for 1 week high season will be about 1k if you book direct then book flights to Palma

then you’ll need spending money

eurocamps do look fun though

PrimaniTu · 02/10/2023 08:07

At least £1k per person for flight and accommodation plus spending money on top.

Family of 5, anywhere between 5k and 10k.

2 adults, grown kids (so not coming) and have paid £6k split across 2 main holidays this year (we prefer early and late as dont need summer school holidays now). When my kids were school age we would spend circa £3k on a two week summer break all in but never went ai and not even every year, sometimes we would go camping in the U.K.

I found all inclusive worse. We tip in countries when it's expected and they are often really cheap countries so it works out worse for us.

Depends where you go though.

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 04/10/2023 13:50

We always find it cheaper to book flights and accommodation separately. We never go AI because you need to pay a lot to get good quality. We just book an apartment and then eat out, you van then choose how much to spend.
I would say we would spend about 2.5k or flights and accommodation, We tend to go to Turkey or Greece.

YaraRocks · 04/10/2023 14:07

We budget £1-£1.5k per person excluding spending money for European trips. For longer haul, we do have to spend a lot more (£10K+) though sometimes we have been able to get a good deal if we book early. We have teens so we are paying for 4 adults and often have to book 2 rooms or a suite so we can all have our space. It was a lot cheaper with free child type places when they were younger!

I absolutely live for our holidays though and look forward to being spoiled and not lifting a finger so we are prepared to spend more. We make savings elsewhere to compensate.

hby9628 · 04/10/2023 14:15

It really depends.
2022 we did AI to Majorca for 10 nights. Ended up spending around £6.5k for a family of 4
2023 we did 14 nights in France which came in more around £5.5k
2024 we are planning 9 nights in Greece but are self catering, hoping to hire a car and have picked quite a nice accommodation & I think it will be around £6.5k again

To be fair you can get some decent deals to Greece if you want more basic accommodation

Our holiday to France was a eurocamp type chalet but it was lovely. Felt like a lovely relaxing break. More so than the AI to Majorca.

Katy123456 · 23/10/2023 11:25

We spend a lot on holidays overall, we prioritise them over other things and are in a fortunate position. But we mix up the cost of each particular trip, some are pricey others cheaper. Other people prioritise a bigger home or nicer cars, or just getting by.

If you don't need to worry about budget pick your holiday first - and be prepared for things to be more expensive than you might be expecting.

If you do need to consider budget fix that first - there will be a holiday to fit your budget whatever it is if your creative in what you do and where you stay etc.

We genuinely love our more expensive and our cheaper holidays equally.

TheBirdintheCave · 23/10/2023 11:34

We're a family of three currently and spend around £2.5k per holiday abroad for a week. I book everything separately though. Flights and apartment are the big spends and then we have a good few months to save up for eating out and activity money.

IDoNotMoisturise · 23/10/2023 11:37

next year's hol is coming in at about £3100 for 2 weeks half board for 2 people (we go to the same place every year, love it) , then there is spending money and taxis, so prob about £4500 in total
