Does anyone like those semi-outdoor, tropical, hotel bathrooms?

I generally don’t like them much. Apart from anything else you can’t control the temperature which can be miserable when it’s very hot and humid. They often seem to have a bit of a weird layout. Sometimes they lack privacy, for instance when the room is on stilts over the sea and someone could (theoretically) swim underneath you. Or, like my current room that I’m sharing with my Mother, where the shower forms part of an internal courtyard and opening the slatted blinds reveals both the shower and the loo from the bed.

OMG that’s like my IDEAL hotel toilet. Away, outside, interesting .

That right up to the bed ,frosted glass one though is my worst nightmare!

I had a hotel room in Spain where the toilet door wasn’t frosted and had a good 2 inch gap all the way round. Why the fuck would you put a glass door on at all in that case?

That gravel / slate slab arrangement looks like a terrible trip hazard, I'd be concerned about your DM creeping around there at night or even in the day. Stubbed toes also likely.

The hotel would soon regret it if a guest had a tummy upset and didn't make it down the path to the loo.

That door at the end actually opens on to the path outside. I very much hope it was locked but I didn’t check. We were the first room so the occupants of about 20 rooms walked past us to get to reception/restaurant. I could hear them chatting as I was using the bathroom, fortunately I didn’t have any gastrointestinal distress while there. In fact I didn’t poo at all for the three days we were there, which may or may not be connected to the bathroom being open air. 😂

All the places I’ve stayed in with outdoor bathrooms have had indoor ones as well. I always use the outdoor one though, I love them.

Applesaarenttheonlyfruit · 03/10/2023 16:56

When we stayed in the Amazon the whole room was open, not just the bathroom. It did take me a night to calm down, but after that I loved it.

I remember watching an episode of that hotel programme with Giles Coren and Monica Galetti where they go and work in really swanky places. One week they were at the Jade Mountain in St Lucia and the entire room was open air. I couldn't sleep in a room like that. It looked amazing, but I wouldn't want to stay there:

I wouldn’t like it, I am up so many times in the night to use the loo, I also tend to get bitten, so wouldn’t be great for me, no.

I'm staying in a room with a bathroom like this in a couple of weeks. The privacy thing doesn't bother me because I'll be in the room on my own, but I am slightly concerned about being joined in the shower by whatever can fly/crawl over the walls. On TripAdvisor, there's a review of my hotel that complains about something getting into the bathroom at night and eating the soap, complete with a picture of the gnawed soap in question. I do love animals and insects of all kinds, but there are vipers and cobras where I'm going and I don't love them enough to want them in the shower with me...

Freetodowhatiwant · 06/10/2023 21:30

The only time I encountered one of these was at this beautiful resort in an island in the Pacific and I was delighted to see the outdoor shower in the daytime, coconut palms gently swaying in the breeze above my head. At nighttime however, it was something completely different. Practically buzzing with the activity of every single bug known to humans. Hideous! So it's a no from me.

planeberry · 06/10/2023 21:34

Re the bathrooms with glass walls, after a bad experience (we both need privacy in the bathroom), we always travel with some brown parcel paper folded into the bottom of the suitcase, and take a roll of sellotape. Covering the glass has saved our blushes many times.

TizerorFizz · 06/10/2023 23:16

We’ve had glass between the bedroom and bathroom but with an electric blind.

We have also stayed in numerous safari camps with outside bathrooms. We also stayed in a camp and found a scorpion in our room.

We have stayed in a lodge on the Zambezi with a “loo with a view”. I loved it. A loo partly surrounded by a wall. The open side had a view of the Zambezi from the loo.

Most exciting (and never forgotten) was the shower cut into the banks of the Luangwa River in Zambia. Very exposed! To hippos and crocodiles should they be looking. Water was from an oil drum heated up by the sun. The loo, in case you were wondering, was a long drop. We loved that camp!

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 07/10/2023 12:13

It’s like the universe is trying to give me progressively more uncomfortable bathrooms. Nobody wants this when they’re sharing with their mother. The panels can be pulled across but there is no soundproofing (or smell-proofing for that matter). Paro in Bhutan, the most beautiful country, wonderful people, so-so food and weird bathrooms.

The second photo is the view out of the window, so in theory you could open the panels, sit on the loo and look at that view. 😁

I like them during the day after a swim or for getting ready in the evening.i dislike them intently when I need to pee in the night, it feels insecure to me and I can’t see what little beasties will be there.

i had one once where there was an indoor shower and an outdoor one and the loo was inside, that worked well.

cheezncrackers · 07/10/2023 14:57

Oh no @BlackAmericanoNoSugar! As if anyone lying in bed wants a view of the loo!!!!! That's just awful. Why???? No woman would design an en suite bathroom like that.

Bunnycat101 · 07/10/2023 15:09

We had this on our honeymoon in the Maldives but we also had an indoor bathroom as well. I thought I’d love the whole bath outside and open air but think we only used it once and didn’t love it. Definitely less keen on places where there are mosquitos.

SwordBilledHummingbird · 07/10/2023 15:17

We've stayed several places with outdoor bathrooms and we both love them. The only one that was a bit problematic was in North Queensland. It was only the shower that was outside, which was a good thing as the possums came out to play as soon as night fell. And they were VERY friendly and VERY curious. Any showering at the end of the day was done before dusk so we could be back inside before they came to join us! We did however have an indoor jacuzzi tub that I enjoyed sitting in and watching the possums play on the balcony.

parietal · 07/10/2023 15:22

Outdoor shower can be great. Everything else should be indoors unless you are staying in a campsite.

I’m in Uzbekistan and finally have a bathroom with walls, a ceiling and a door with a lock. 😁

You sound like you're on the trip of a lifetime (well, maybe except the bathrooms Grin) What a wonderful experience- lucky you!

Tell me about Uzbekistan. <sits down>

I think the stans are my next adventure trip.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 08/10/2023 18:53

I only arrived this evening @MrsTerryPratchett , I’ll let you know in a couple of days. Bhutan is the place that I want to go back to, I absolutely loved it there.

I know you weren't asking me, but I went to Uzbekistan last year and really loved it. Clean, friendly, wonderful architecture, surprisingly good food (I'd been told prior to departure to expect lots of meat and little else, but there was plenty of other things to choose from), loads to see and do. If you want to go, I reckon it'll only remain relatively unspoilt for another couple of years before it gets more expensive and touristy.

I didn't do any other 'stans but I hear they're less well set up for visitors than Uzbekistan. That may be a pro or a con, depending on what sort of traveller you are!

MrsTerryPratchett · 08/10/2023 21:26

Thanks @ICriedAllTheWayToTheChipShop good review. Definitely want to try it. I have a very sophisticated Uzbek friend who I will text the whole way around for tips if I go. She's instagram perfect all the time so her photos of home are amazing.

@BlackAmericanoNoSugar Bhutan is top of all my dream boards Grin I wanted to go but no one wants to go with me. Which someone pointed out is the most First World Problem ever and I should stop saying it. I think I'll try at some point and combine Nepal and Bhutan. No interest really in Everest/base camp. Which seems to be where everyone goes.

South America as well.

The world is too big and life is too short.

I’d go with you! Although my DH might get rather jealous. I’m restricted to summer at the moment and it’s driving me mad! Top of my post GSCE/A level trip and possible first without kids.

You could use your phone as a torch but actually there are some brilliant light strips on Amazon that you charge up with a phone charger and are motion sensitive that would help next time.

This is a brilliant solution.

Another alternative would be to choose a hotel with walls 😉

It's a deal. My piggy bank is empty after the last trip but I will start saving.,
