Florence between Christmas and new year

I’m thinking of booking a getaway between Christmas and new year this year. Does anyone know if having 4 full days in Florence in the low season will be worth it?

DC are 14 and 10 and would mostly be in it for the food!

I was just in Florence and filled 2 days with no problem and that without the main art galleries. I loved wandering around and do love visiting churches though.

It's easy to take a train to Pisa for an additional day.

Only issue I had was the hotels, there are lots of small ones and rooms are tiny plus they are often B&B only. You need to look closely.

I don't think I had a bad meal in Florence.

Have a thorough look if there is anything closed though.

It'll be busy with Italian tourists. City breaks especially to cities famous for art are very popular during shorter holidays like Christmas/NY. We went one year then and the queues to get in museums etc were exactly the same as the summer.

You can visit lots of places from Florence too. Pisa, Siena, Bologna at a push. (one of the coldest days I have ever experienced in my life was in Bologna between Christmas and NY)

I often go abroad at Twixmas. It's usually not too busy as most locals are with their families or at home still for Christmas rather than going out. Great chance to get out to see things.

Enjoy!

I do it every year. The city Christmas decorations are like nothing in the UK, it's so magical! You will all love it, and new years eve is amazing. There are usually live bands or small orchestras in the squares that are free to wander into, with lots of people dancing. And it's not a big drinking culture either so very different to typical British NYE where I just wouldn't in a million years take kids onto the streets!

OP - if you go, do check slots for the Uffizi, Galleria Academia (David statue) and Palazzo Pitti well in advance.

They are booked up very quickly.

Ah this sounds amazing! I got cold feet about the cold and booked for Barcelona instead Blush

I feel like it’s back on the table for next year though!

Barcelona will be great:

I know it’s not a popular opinion but I much prefer Spanish food to Italian. After day 3 in Florence I was carb’d out 😂
