Lanzarote Christmas time with kids? Or other suggestions?

Looking for somewhere to go that is a reasonably cheap flight away (!) with children this Christmas. Maybe leaving on Boxing Day, returning around New Year’s Day.

Any recommendations? Considering Lanzarote, I haven’t been before. DH has memories of it being called Lanza-grotty (Ie: lads’ crazy drinking culture!) so he’s sceptical! I read that it’s beautiful and that isn’t the case anymore.

Anyone been at that time of year? Or other suggestions?

Oh that’s a shame, diddleflop! Any recommendations for places to go that don’t cost a bomb (Ie not the Indian Ocean… one day!) after Christmas? I find that space between Christmas and new year very dull (I am quite a restless person - as is one of my children!).

Do you want warmth / sunshine?

I think that there are parts of the canaries that aren’t grim at that time of year, but it does depend on what you like

I have no idea about budgets or Christmas or anything but Lanzarote is beautiful. It doesn't have high rise hotels; lots of amazing artworks; vineyards; lovely local produce; very clean; lots to see; beautiful countryside. Not laddish or sun holiday tacky at all I would have said.

Yes it’s my least favourite time of year!! Bar parts of January / February when it’s dark and nothing much is happening.

I absolutely love December up until Boxing Day when everything sort of stops! Dh and I always bicker, kids are restless, no one is about, it’s muddy on walks, etc.

So, to me, a holiday sounds ideal!! But I’m not too fussed about getting packed to go the day after Christmas. But maybe the 27th would be more practical!

Hmm not sure about budget. Maybe £800 on flights? (Four of us). Don’t know about accommodation - haven’t looked into it at all yet! Maybe £1500-£2000?

I am not sure whether I want warmth / sunshine. If not that, then something very cool and fun. I don’t mind sun without warmth, but definitely fun rather than relaxing if that makes sense?

Hi OP, have a look at this family run business

www.lanzaroteretreats.com

Went there in 2015 after Christmas, and it was lovely

Madeira is supposed to be really good for new years and is warm-ish at that time of year.

You could look at an Alpine resort with lots of non-skiing activities if you want things to do

There are also cities with Christmas markets that go on beyond Christmas - if that would be something that would be interesting. Budapest for example is nice at that time of year with the thermal spas and the markets go on until New Years Day.

In the Canaries, the southern Tenerife resorts are truly year round. Costa Adeje might fit the bill. If you want to be able to swim, you’ll definitely need at minimum a heated pool, even better if there’s an indoor option. It might be a bit late to book though for this year as the hotels do get very booked up over Christmas / New Year.
