King's Cross to Charing Cross - an hour - really?

Does it really take an hour to travel between King's Cross and Charing Cross as the trainline seems to say? They're on the same line, surely it can't take that long!
Are there any buses, would that be quicker? Failing that, would a taxi be a good idea?

It won't take anything like an hour BUT they are not on same branch of Northern Line - you have to change at Euston.

Tamum · 05/03/2008 17:46

I don't think they're on the same line, are they- different branches of the Northern line, but no, I would have said 20 minutes would be plenty. I doubt that a taxi would be much quicker, but maybe slightly.

thank you! an hour seems ridiculous, unless they're just allowing for the 1st train to be late...

Or Victoria line then Northern- the world's your oyster

Quattrocento · 05/03/2008 17:49

You can walk to Euston and go straight down, or change at Leicester Square or Covent Garden.

Either way it takes around 30 mins. Unless Kama is going to teach us all how to fly, of course.

StealthPolarBear · 05/03/2008 17:49

why do i need to change?

Blimey, you can walk it in about 45 minutes. I think they're just covering themselves in case you miss a connection.

Quattrocento · 05/03/2008 17:53

God I am going mad - I didn't mean change at Leicester Square or Covent Garden, I meant walk from Leicester Square or Covent Garden. It's less than 10 mins from each.

You need to change because the Northern line has two branches- you can't go direct to King's Cross, but it's easy whichever way you look at it (though I agree that 11 minutes seems a tad optimistic )

Well, I know it shouldn't, but it frequently did when I commuted a very similar route with a change of trains. Maybe things have improved.

StealthPolarBear · 05/03/2008 21:48

Thanks everyone, and given that we won't have a clue what we're doing...maybe an hour isn't oo far off the mark!

Standard train timetables always leave an hour for underground crossings. It's so if you have a booked train, it allows for delays etc.

StealthPolarBear · 05/03/2008 21:58

Ah that would explain it, thanks. It just makes for a very early morning to get there by 2

As others have mentioned, you have to change. There are lost of options, but the best/quickest is usually Victoria line to Oxford Circus then Bakerloo line. Simply beacuse the Victoria and Bakerloo platforms at Oxford circus are right next to each other (no stairs or connecting passageways). Though don't use Victoria line after 22:00 in the week at the moment as it's being repaired!

Thank you! No, I wouldn't be using it that late

Useful rule of thumb - for every station on the tube that you go through on your journey add two minutes.

I suspect they give you time to allow for:

a) carrying luggage which will slow you down
b) having to wait for a tube/connection
c) an easy journey rather than having to panic about the time
d) going the wrong way up the line because you're not from London and read the map wrongly!

Thecure · 21/03/2008 16:38

it takes about 45 mins to walk it.
