Venice - hotel recommendations

Hi, has anyone stayed in a lovely hotel in Venice recently they could recommend? I've searched previous posts but would prefer recent recommendations. Our budget is flexible & we would like somewhere central. Many thanks

We stayed here.. wouldn't bother paying the extra for a canal view but rooms spacious and air con and good breakfast www.anticodoge.com/en/

I've stayed at the Monaco and Grand Canal hotel.Very close to St Marks square and water taxi stops.Depending on the time of year you are going, you can have breakfast on the decking overlooking the Grand canal and watch the gondoliers getting their gondolas ready.
If you like peach Bellinis then the famous Harry's bar is right next to it( at least it was when we were there over 10 yrs ago).

We stayed here last summer for a couple
of nights. Beautiful hotel and the location was central. Rooftop bar looks out over the grand canal and the restaurant also has a terrace over the water. The champagne breakfast was amazing!

Thank you that looks gorgeous.

We always stay at The Hilton on Guidecca. It is 1 of a handful that has a pool in Venice (we go late May/June, so I like it as a reprieve from the heat and people in the late afternoon). Hotel is beautiful and they provide private taxis very, very regularly direct to St. Mark’s.

@guesttest2 We book via Mr & Mrs Smith. So I’m attaching fab hotels. We have stayed at the Palazzo Barbarigo. It’s gorgeous! Lovely bar looking over the Grand Canal. Great area for sightseeing too. The other three are my style and DD724 is interesting if you don’t mind Dorsoduro. Otherwise the Grassi is utterly Venetian!

We stayed at the Palazzo Barbarigo Sul Canal Grande www.palazzobarbarigo.com/en/ back in 2015. A Small boutique hotel in a genuine palazzo.

River taxi to the hotel entrance on the canal from the airport. room overlooking the Grand Canal. Finding the hotel from the street is a bit more challenging as it is down a narrow alley. Rooms are dark and stylish.

About a 10m walk to the Rialto bridge, and very convenient for the river bus stop. Would definitely return if we do Venice again.

Dorsoduro I would recommend as an area, it's quieter but still a stone's throw from everything.

TizerorFizz · 22/09/2023 12:47

@macshoto Its a wonderful hotel. It’s challenging to find on foot but the little balcony in the bar is fantastic.

THANK YOU all so much for the recommendations. We're going in May & it's so overwhelming with all the choices of hotels & areas so personal recommendations are really helpful.

I like somewhere that’s Venetian but up to date in decor.

namechanged221 · 28/09/2023 01:06

I stayed here

www.kempinski.com/en/san-clemente-palace-kempinski

The hotel is on an island opposite san marco square and there are regular free water taxis over there, takes like 5 mins.

There is a large pool and the breakfasts are frankly astounding.

Yeah LOL no way in hell am I putting the details of my favourite Venetian place to stay on a public website.

I will say OP, think about what you want from Venice. And then think again about which of those things you prioritise. Eg do you want a fast seamless arrival? In that case, a place with water taxi facility is worth it. Do you want to be absolutely in the heart of everything? How big a room do you want? (Lots of rooms in Venice are small.)

Bear in mind it's a place like no other, literally. I mean it's not just that there's loads of canals, it's not like Amsterdam or something, it's literally canals and paths, so apart from the absolute epicenter which yes is busy, the rest isn't "busy" in the way other cities are, because there's no roads. And it's pretty small. And the crime rate is super super low. I didn't "get" the implications of any of that till my first trip there - that you can be in the heart of one of the most visited cities in the world and yet be in a really quite quiet street, with no noise, sirens or danger of getting mugged (apart from the price of coffee in Florian's LOL). It also means that staying anywhere other than the central "fish" section (unless it's an even smaller island) you instantly lose the entire point of what makes Venice different. In addition there are lots of mosquitoes and they are savage and it can get very hot. So a charming period property is all very well but you need Aircon, fumigation and screens ime.

There are all sorts of places to stay from full on hotels to b&b arrangements and ime the b&b owners take their business and stewardship of their buildings very seriously - it is a competitive market and the city is small.

I have previously stayed in a hotel there which I was not particularly happy with, and also in a b&b where the owner was a little careless wrt updating amenities. My place of choice now - and I have been there three times - is a b&b that is professionally run - a palace property that has been in the family a long time but all the rented rooms are modernised, they have a couple of paid staff, full aircon etc amenities, and they bring breakfast to your room each morning . For me that's what I want in Venice because I am out and about all day and I like to go to different restaurants at night so the room amenities are important but I don't require extra services like restaurant or private water taxi as I'm happy enough to get the vaporetto.

It could be different for you of course. So you need to prioritise what it is you want to pay for.

@Goreg what an essay to say absolutely nothing of value! “Venice doesn’t have streets” - hold the front page!
