Does anyone know what happens if someone is taken ill abroad (Spain) without insurance?
Currently in hospital, looking likely for minimum 3 days.
Anyone know what happens please?

Have they got a GHIC card? Might help.

cherryassam · 19/09/2023 22:08

Imgoingslightlymadd · 19/09/2023 22:10

fruitbrewhaha · 19/09/2023 22:11

jazzyfips · 19/09/2023 22:12

A big bill. Nothing to be done other than suck it up.

Imgoingslightlymadd · 19/09/2023 22:13

Will he be allowed back to England without paying it though?? I have no idea how this works and have visions of him being banged up abroad 🤦‍♀️

We have about a grand 'savings' and no family really to ask for the money

www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/get-healthcare-cover-travelling-abroad/get-temporary-cover-emergency-treatment-abroad-provisional-replacement-certificate

Get on and do this. It should at least cover the costs of anything broadly equivalent to NHS care.

Thereafter anything else is a big bill, as pp have said. Payment terms should be explained before treatment (if they will even treat without payment) and as long as he sticks to them, he won't get banged up!

Bs0u416d · 19/09/2023 22:16

If they're accessing state services then they either wont have to pay or they will pay at a local rate depending on local arrangements. If they're in a private facility, they will presumably need to pay for the care they recieve.

For the former, they would need and EHIC or GHIC card and if they don't have one, they should do the following.

If you do not have your EHIC or GHIC with youYou’ll need to apply for a Provisional Replacement Certificate (PRC) if you need treatment and do not have your EHIC or GHIC, or your card is lost or stolen abroad.
Call the Overseas Healthcare Services. This is part of the NHS Business Services Authority (BSA).

Apply for a GHIC now. I have a feeling that if you are eligible it applies - I was def told you don’t need to have it on you to be able to use it (tho having it makes things easier). Call the EHIC\GHIC folk in the morning? The no I have saved on my phone is +44 191 218 1999

elderflowerandpomelo · 19/09/2023 22:16

Oh look, crossed posts!

cherryassam · 19/09/2023 22:16

Is he in a state hospital or a private hospital?

Imgoingslightlymadd · 19/09/2023 22:17

Great thank you! Can I apply on behalf of him though?? Hes lost all his belongings abroad, god knows whats gone on. I've been absolutely worried sick for 3 days!

I had googled but wanted to speak to real people so to speak rather than reading information online

OP posts:
Imgoingslightlymadd · 19/09/2023 22:21

He's in Our Lady of Candelaria University Hospital

OP posts:
Imgoingslightlymadd · 19/09/2023 22:21

No he has his passport luckily! Only thing he has

OP posts:
MaggieFS · 19/09/2023 22:25

Yes, you can apply on his behalf. No idea why you'd prefer mn to official web pages, but suggest you start reading them. I'm assuming it's your son? Must be worrying. All the best.

Imgoingslightlymadd · 19/09/2023 22:47

It isn't that I prefer them, I just find it easier to process the information when it's coming from people rather than reading blocks of info if that makes sense.
Thank you yes it is and yes worrying
