Sickness bug but insurance won't pay out if we don't go?!

It just feels unfair to of taken out travel insurance months in advance to now be 3 days before we fly and we have sickness bug, DC came down with it yesterday and I have today. It hasn't hit DH yet so still waiting for that.

I have phoned and they won't cover it for a stomach bug, doctor won't provide a fit to fly note as we don't meet the criteria (?!) so it's go and possibly infect a plane full of people or lose £3k!

Obviously I would prefer to go, which is why we're trying to reschedule for even just a few days later but not getting anywhere insurance won't help GP was useless and I'll feel horrid if we ruin everyone else's holidays spreading a bug on the plane.

We can't afford to lose £3k and not go!

If you're not flying for another few days, you'll probably be over it by then. They're usually short lived

Viviennemary · 19/09/2023 14:29

It obviously isn't a serious enough complaint to be covered by your insurance I wouldn't have thought this would be covered. It's not serious.

vangoing · 19/09/2023 14:30

It hasn't got DH yet which is my concern, if he develops symptoms over the next 2 days he won't be 48 hours free of symptoms most likely, even if the rest of us hopefully are Sad

Take steps to prevent your DH from catching it, mostly bleaching and cleaning everything to within an inch of its life constantly (I've done this many times when DS has come down with something and me and DH haven't so it isn't inevitable).
You've still got three days, so enough time for 48 hours to pass after you have stopped being sick. Then keep everything crossed that it doesn't last more than the next 24 hours.
Most travel insurance companies require medical confirmation of illness to allow you to claim. Is this what yours have asked for or is it just not covered at all?

Smallinthesmoke · 19/09/2023 14:37

It might be covid. Do some tests?

GrumpyPanda · 19/09/2023 14:41

You'll be better by the time you fly, but make sure you all mask up properly on board (FFP95), especially DH.

What difference does it make? If someone has an active infection they should be taking steps not to share it anyway

Maiyakat · 19/09/2023 15:04

If the GP won't help there are various companies that will do a fit to fly/unfit to fly certificate remotely

The GP / insurer is going to say he's not fit to fly when he's not actually caught the sickness bug (yet). There's thinking ahead but this is a little bit too much crystal ball / glass half-empty.

TiredandLate · 19/09/2023 15:25

I think you're fretting too soon. Keep DH away from you both as much as possible. I've never had a sickness bug despite them going round work/school fairly often. I'm susceptible to cold bugs but never sickness so it's not guaranteed he'll get it!

Uggtrending · 19/09/2023 15:30

Oh Dear. If its D&V you should really be 48 hours clear. What bad timing I can see how you are worried OP wishing you all well soon!

In relation to insurance, most travel policies include Covid cover.

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 19/09/2023 16:11

Isolate your DH you and your DC will probably be fine by then.

vangoing · 20/09/2023 12:38

And DH is throwing up now too 😭😭

That's appalling what is the point of travel insurance if they won't pay out when you are too ill to fly?

Did the insurer say they wouldn't cover even if medical evidence of unfit to fly?
Would a private GP write a letter?

LegendsBeyond · 20/09/2023 16:05

Whatever you do, don’t fly if still ill. It’s so selfish to inflict that on everyone else on the plane.

Chersfrozenface · 21/09/2023 10:41

Check with your insurance company exactly who they will accept an unfit to travel note from. Does it have to be your own GP (and how would they know who that is)? If not, there are heaps of online doctors dho will provide a note for a fee.

Ours covered a sickness bug. They loved our flight a few days later. That's so odd. I thought they were meant to cover any illness

DoughnutDreams · 21/09/2023 11:33

This makes sense of so many recent news reports of copious amounts of V&D on flights.

Let's hope you're not the next TikTok story!
